The vast land reclamation project on the Fiery Cross Reef in the Spratly Islands is one of several pursued by China but the first that could accommodate an airstrip, Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Pool said.
WASHINGTON: China is building a massive island in the South China Sea that could host an airfield in an area where Beijing is locked in bitter territorial disputes with neighbouring states, a US military spokesman said on Friday.
The vast land reclamation project on the Fiery Cross Reef in the Spratly Islands is one of several pursued by China but the first that could accommodate an airstrip, Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Pool said. "It appears that's what they're working toward," Pool told AFP. A harbour also has been dug out on the east side of the reef that appears large enough for tankers and naval warships.
The United States wants China to halt the project and for other governments to cease similar efforts. "We urge China to stop its land reclamation program, and engage in diplomatic initiatives to encourage all sides to restrain themselves in these sorts of activities," Pool said.
In the past three months, China has used dredgers to construct an island about 3,000 metre long and 200-300 metre wide on the reef, which was previously under water, according to a report by IHS Jane's Defence.
The results of the dredging are captured in satellite pictures obtained by IHS Jane's that cover a period between Aug 8 and Nov 14. "The land reclamation at Fiery Cross is the fourth such project undertaken by China in the Spratly Islands in the last 12-18 months and by far the largest in scope," the report said.
Before the latest dredging work, the Chinese navy had used a concrete platform and no artificial island had been created. China already has built islands at Johnson South Reef, Cuarteron Reef and Gaven Reefs.
Beijing claims nearly all of the resource-rich South China Sea, while Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam have asserted their own claims by building structures on reefs or occupying islands. The other Southeast Asian countries already had airfields in the area and China's latest efforts could put it in a stronger position as Beijing pursues its claims.
IHS Jane's said the move appeared aimed to get other countries to relinquish their claims, or provide China a stronger negotiating position should talks take place over the dispute.
The United States has urged China and other states to settle the territorial disputes peacefully and without coercion while urging Beijing to support a regional, multilateral maritime "code of conduct" to defuse confrontations at sea. But Beijing has tended to prefer bilateral talks with its smaller neighbours, which are heavily dependent on Chinese trade.
China argues it has sovereign control over almost all of the South China Sea, a vital shipping route that is believed to hold lucrative oil and gas deposits. 소변의 색깔, 빈도, 양, 성분 등을 통해 건강의 이상 여부를 점검해볼 수 있는 바로미터 역할을 하기 때문이다.
정상적인 소변은
△색깔이 맑고 투명하며 섭취 성분에 따라 엷은 황색에서 엷은 황갈색을 띤다.
△약간의 지린내 외에는 거의 냄새가 나지 않으며
△소변에 찌꺼기가 없어야 한다.
△방광 용적을 볼 때 대략 3~4시간 만에 차도록 되어 있기 때문에 커피나 술과 같은 이뇨를 자극하는 상황을 배제하면 소변횟수는 하루 평균 5~7회 정도로, 배뇨 간격이 2시간 이내인 경우는 빈뇨에 해당한다.
소변으로 보는 건강 이상 신호
거품이 많은 소변, 신장질환 의심
일반적으로 소변을 볼 때는 낙차나 소변이 나오는 힘 즉 오줌발에 의해 공기가 형성되면서 거품이 생기다가 곧 사라지고 맑은 소변을 볼 수 있다.
또한 땀을 많이 흘리거나 강도 높은 운동 후, 심한 스트레스 상황, 열성 질환, 체내에 수분이 충분치 못한 경우 등에는 진한 소변이 나오면서 거품이 생길 수도 있다.
하지만 이런 일시적인 경우를 제외하고, 수분을 많이 섭취해도 소변의 양에 변화가 없거나 몸이 계속 피로하고, 거품뇨가 지속되는 경우에는 단백뇨를 의심해볼 수 있다.
단백뇨는 신장질환이나 신장과 연관된 전신질환이 있을 때 나타나며, 신증후군, 다발성골수종, 용혈, 당뇨병성 신증 등과 연관될 수 있어 전문 의료진의 확인이 필요하다.
하이닥 신장내과 안정경 상담의는 "병적인 단백뇨인지 확인하기 위해 '24시간 소변 요단백'을 검사해서, 300mg 이상의 단백뇨가 나타나면 병적인 단백뇨로 보고 원인을 찾아야 한다"고 설명하고 "전신질환이 없다면 신증후군이나 신장염으로 판단하고 필요시 신장조직검사를 통해 원인을 찾아야 한다"고 조언했다.
빈뇨, 야간뇨 등 소변 불편감이 있는 남성, 전립선비대증 의심
전립선이 커지면 요도를 압박하게 되면서 소변 줄기가 가늘어지고, 소변 보기가 힘들고, 소변을 보고 난 뒤에도 시원치 않고, 소변을 자주 보게 되는 등 소변 불편감 즉 배뇨장애가 나타난다.
50대에는 50%, 60대에는 60%, 70대에는 70%라는 말이 있을 정도로 남성에게 흔한 전립선비대증은 일차적으로 약물요법으로 치료하게 된다.
알파차단제는 약물의 힘으로 전립선이 누르고 있는 요도 부위를 열리게 만들어 소변장애를 치료하는데 약 기운이 떨어지면 원래 증상이 다시 생기므로 장기 복용을 하게 될 수 있다.
5알파 환원효소억제제는 전립선이 자라는 데 필요한 남성호르몬을 억제함으로써 전립선이 커지는 것을 막고 부분적으로 전립선을 퇴화시켜 전립선의 크기를 작게 만들지만 효과는 금방 나타나지 않거나 아예 없는 경우도 있으며 최소 6개월 이상 복용해야 한다.
PDE5 억제제(발기부전치료제)는 전립선과 요도평활근을 이완시켜 배뇨증상을 개선하며, 비아그라, 시알리스, 누리그라, 팔팔정 등이 있다. 전립선 비대증과 발기부전이 있으면서 당뇨병과 고혈압 등 만성질환을 앓고 있는 경우 PDE5 억제제 고용량(50~100mg)을 일회성으로 복용하기보다는 저용량(25mg)을 데일리로 복용하는 것이 바람직하다.
냄새가 심한 소변, 요로계 염증질환 의심
정상적인 소변에서는 악취가 나지 않지만, 소변에서 심한 냄새가 느껴지는 경우에는 요로계의 염증이나 감염성 질환을 의심해볼 수 있다.
염증이 심할 때는 배뇨시 통증과 반복적인 고열이 동반되며 이는 매우 심각한 증상이므로 항생제 치료 등 적절한 병원치료를 꼭 받아야 한다.
신장에 문제가 생겨 질산염이나 암모니아가 제대로 배출되지 못하는 경우에도 소변에서 강한 암모니아 냄새가 날 수 있다.
붉은 기가 도는 소변, 다양한 원인의 혈뇨 의심
소변에 피가 섞여 나오는 혈뇨는 소변이 만들어지는 신장과 소변이 이동하는 통로인 요로계통에 문제가 생긴 것을 의미한다.
신장, 신우, 요관 등 상부 요로계 출혈인 경우에는 소변색이 검붉은 색깔이나 콜라색을 띠고, 방광, 요도, 전립선 등 하부 요로계 출혈인 경우에는 붉은 색깔이 나며 모든 경우에서 반드시 병원진단이 필요하다. 특히 40대 이상에서 혈뇨가 있는 경우에는 철저한 검사와 함께 이상이 발견되지 않더라도 신장암이나 방광암 등 추적 검사가 필요하다.
하이닥 비뇨기과 김태한 상담의는 "혈뇨의 원인은 요로 결석에서 염증성 질환, 암 등 매우 다양하므로 진료를 지연시키지 말고 소변검사, 세균검사, 초음파 검사 등으로 원인질환을 반드시 확인할 필요가 있다"고 강조했다.

You certainly wouldn't mind a slow boat to China if you were bobbing along this river.
While the Great Wall Of China is the very obvious tourist destination, the river-town of Wuzhen is one that should be on the must-see list if you are in the area.
Located in the centre of the six ancient towns south of Yangtze River, 17 kilometres (10.56 miles) north of the city of Tongxiang, Wuzhen displays its history in its ancient stone bridges floating on mild water, its stone pathways between the mottled walls and its delicate wood carvings.

All the buildings face onto the river, the waterways are the streets and the riverbanks are where the markets spring from. Civilisation of the town dates back some 7,000 years and it lies within the triangle formed by Hangzhou, Suzhou and Shanghai.
Mao Dun, a renowned modern Chinese revolutionary writer, was born in Wuzhen, and his well-known work, 'The Lin's Shop', describes the life of Wuzhen. In 1991, Wuzhen was authorized as the Provincial Ancient Town of History and Culture and ranked first among the six ancient towns south of the Yangtze River.

With motorists and cyclists battling for space on London’s congested roads, a company is proposing a £600m ‘floating cycleway’ that would take thousands of cyclists of the streets and put them on the Thames.
Proposed by the River Cycleway Consortium, the Thames Deckway would serve as a nearly eight-mile cycling route from Battersea to Canary Wharf.
The first composite image released by the organisation, founded by artist Anna Hill and architect David Nixon, shows the costly path skirting the south bank in front of City Hall and slipping past HMS Belfast.

Designed for commuter and leisure cyclists and pedestrians, the east-west cycleway could be constructed along London’s busy waterfront within two years if it is approved, according to the consortium.
Without any vehicular traffic to impede them, fit cyclists could pedal the entire length in about 30 minutes.
The mid-point would be the Millennium Bridge.

With its unique proposal, River Cycleway Consortium is challenging city planners to think outside the box to reduce congestion and pollution while encouraging more people to cycle.
The group is raising money to conduct a feasibility study which will identify how many on- and off-ramps would be required and how it would avoid moorings. It plans to seek private investors if the project proceeds.

But the plan faces hurdles because of its nine-figure price tag and planning requirements.
In its proposal, River Cycleway Consortium said the path would complement the ‘Crossrail for bikes’ plan unveiled by Mayor Boris Johnson last month.
Under that proposal, two new urban cycleways – an 18-mile east-west route from Barking to Acton, and a three-mile north-south route from Elephant & Castle to King’s Cross – would link to other routes at a cost £47m.

매년 상반기와 하반기, 두 차례에 걸쳐 약 100만명의 취업준비생들은 한바탕 전쟁을 시작한다. 단군 이래 최고의 학업 능력을 가진 학생들에게도 취직은 ‘하늘의 별 따기’ 다.
2014년도 취업시장은 그 어느 때보다도 힘들었다. 지속적인 경기침체로 고용시장에 매서운 한파가 불어닥쳤기 때문이다. 내년 전망 조차 밝지 않다. 본지는 6회에 걸쳐 최근 트렌드로 자리잡은 이공계 취업 강세 현상과 취업 장벽을 뚫기 위한 노력을 하고 있는 이들의 모습을 조망한다.
구직자들은 취업시장이 좁다고 푸념하지만 채용을 담당하는 인사 관계자들은 마땅한 인재가 없다고 한탄한다. 채용과 취업이라는 같은 목표를 바라보지만 서로의 생각은 다르다.
취업준비생, 뽑아주는 기업이 없다 최근 취업준비생들 사이에서는 입사원서를 100번썼다는 이야기를 심심치 않게 들을 수 있다. 그렇다고 모두가 취업하는 것도 아니다. 전공을 살려 취업하는 것은 꿈 같은 이야기가 된 지 오래다.
한국교육개발원이 지난 9월 발표한 ‘2014년 고등교육기관 졸업자 공공 DB연계 취업통계조사’에 따르면 졸업생 55만7236명 중 27만1203명만 취업에 성공했다. 약 48.7% 수준이다.
전통적으로 취업률이 높았던 ‘전·화·기’ (전기전자, 화학공학, 기계공학) 전공도 예전 같지 않다. 2012년 70%를 넘었던 이들 학과의 취업률은 2014년 현재 62.5% 수준까지 떨어져 얼어붙은 취업시장을 단적으로 보여주고 있다.
공채보다 수시채용을, 신입직보다 경력직을 선호하는 경향도 늘고 있어 경력이 일천한 대학교 졸업반 학생들의 시름은 더욱 깊다.
외국계 기업 취업을 준비하는 J씨(30, 아주대 산업공학)는 “취업박람회나 공채 정보를 뒤져봐도 신입공채보다는 경력직을 뽑는 경우가 대부분이다” 라며 “외국계 기업은 상대적으로 경력직을 선호하는 것 같아 취업이 쉽지 않다”고 전했다.
명문 대학교 간판이 있어도 사정은 별반 다르지 않다. 내년 2월 졸업을 앞두고 있는 L씨(28,서울대학교 사회계열)는 올해 지원한 5곳의 공공기관, 기업에서 모두 탈락의 고배를 마셨다.
그는 “최근 들어 로스쿨 졸업생들도 눈을 낮춰 신입공채로 취업하는 경우가 많아 경쟁이 더욱 치열해졌다” 며 “남부럽지않는 스펙에도 계속 탈락하다보니 자괴감마저 든다”고 한탄했다.
기업, 뽑을 인재가 없다 취업준비생들의 이런 푸념에 대해 기업들은 위축된 경기상황으로 채용규모가 줄어든 것도 이유지만, 마땅한 인재도 눈에 띄질 않는다고 입을 모은다. 소위 말하는 ‘스펙’ 만 갖춘 획일화 된 인재는 큰 매력이 없다고 전하기도 한다. 더 이상 어학점수, 학점, 대외활동 등만으로 인재를 선발하지 않는다는 것이다.
취업전문가들은 대기업에 무조건 입사지원서를 제출해 그 중 합격하는 곳으로 가겠다는 생각을 버려야 한다고 조언한다. 일종의 ‘묻지 마 취업’ 을 위해 입사원서를 100개씩 쓰는 행동은 잘못됐다는 것이다.
정주희 잡코리아 좋은일연구소 연구원은“취업준비에 앞서 내가 지원하고자 하는 기업을 철저히 분석하고 특히 그 회사에서 각 직무가 무슨 일을 하고 어떤 역량을 갖춘 인재를 필요로 하는지 파악하는 것이 우선”이라며“자신이 갖춘 경험과 지식 중 이에 해당하는 능력들이 해당 직무가 요구하는 역량과 어떻게 부합하는지 충분히 설명할 수 있어야 한다”고 강조했다.
기업의 경력직 선호에 대해 인사담당자들은 ‘업무수행능력’ 때문이라고 입을 모은다. 기업 입장에서 신입사원보다는 자신이 어떤 포지션에 강점이 있는지 명확히 알고 있는 경력직 인재를 더 선호할 수 밖에 없다는 생각이다.
김옥선 슈나이더일렉트릭 인사팀장은 “기업은 성과를 창출하는 것이 주요한 목표” 라며 “현장에서 실제 프로세스를 경험해 직무 이해도가 높은 경력직 사원이 기업이 성과를 내는 데 더 도움이 될 수밖에 없다” 고 밝혔다. 전기신문 김승교 기자 (kimsk@), 박경민 기자 (pkm@)
