교장 성추행 고발 여학생 화형시킨 16명 전원 사형

    방글라데시에서 교장의 성추행을 고발한 여학생이 학교 옥상에서 산채로 화형당한 사건과 관련된 16명이 모두 사형 선고를 받았다고 영국의 BBC가 25일 보도했다.

16명 중에는 교장 등 학교 교사 2명과 학생들, 지역 정치인 2명도 포함돼 있다고 BBC는 전했다.

16 Sentenced to Death in Bangladesh For Setting Student On Fire BY ASSOCIATED PRESS OCTOBER 25, 2019 (DHAKA, Bangladesh) — A court in eastern Bangladesh sentenced the principal of an Islamic school and 15 others to death on Thursday over the killing of an 18-year-old woman who was set on fire for refusing to drop sexual harassment charges against the principal. Judge Mamunur Rashid of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal found Principal Siraj Ud Doula and the others guilty of either killing the woman or ordering her death in April. The brutality of the death triggered nationwide protests. Tens of thousands of people attended Nusrat Jahan Rafi’s funeral prayers in her hometown, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina pledged that her family would get quick justice. All of the defendants, including a local ruling party member and some students at the school, were in the court in handcuffs during the reading of the verdict. The principal, who had smiled as he was brought into the court, cried after the verdict was announced, local media reported. 사건의 전말은 이렇다. 올해 19세인 누스랏 자한 라피는 수도 다카에서 160㎞ 떨어진 소도시 페니에서 이슬람 학교를 다니고 있었다.

그는 지난 3월 27일 학교 교장의 부름을 받고 교장실로 갔다. 교장은 라피에게 여러 차례 불쾌한 신체접촉을 했고 라피는 저항 끝에 도망쳤다.

이슬람 국가인 방글라데시에서는 많은 여성들이 사회적 시선과 낙인이 두려워 성추행을 당해도 발설하지 않지만 라피는 용기를 내 교장을 경찰에 고발했다.

교장은 곧바로 경찰에 체포됐지만 라피에게 엄청난 시련이 기다리고 있었다. 라피의 고발에 분노한 남학생들이 교장을 석방하라는 시위를 벌인 것.

남학생들의 만행은 이에 그치지 않았다. 라피를 산채로 화형시킨 것. 라피는 4월 6일 기말시험을 보기 위해 학교에 갔다. 그러나 믿었던 친구의 배신으로 결국 산채로 화형 당했다.

라피는 급우가 옥상에서 집단구타를 당하고 있다는 친구의 꼬임에 넘어가 학교 옥상으로 올라갔다. 4~5명의 남학생들이 옥상에서 라피를 기다리고 있었다.

이들은 라피에게 고소를 취하할 것을 요구했다. 그러나 라피가 이를 거부하자 이들은 라피의 몸에 휘발유를 부은 뒤 불을 붙였다. 라피는 병원으로 긴급 이송됐지만 응급차 안에서 숨졌다.

경찰 조사 결과, 용의자들은 라피가 분신자살한 것으로 위장하기 위해 현장을 훼손한 것으로 드러났다.

사건 이후 지역뉴스와 SNS 등을 통해 라피의 죽음이 널리 알려지자 방글라데시 사회는 분노했다. 수천 명의 인파가 항의 집회를 열었고 많은 사람들이 라피의 장례식의 참석해 그의 죽음을 애도했다.

결국 방글라데시 법원은 이 사건에 관련된 16명 전원에게 사형을 선고했다고 BBC는 전했다.
