Germany, France, Italy and Spain halt use of AstraZeneca vaccine
Suspensions follow reports that some people developed blood clots after receiving the shot, but the WHO and the EMA say they have seen no evidence of a link.
Germany, France, Italy and Spain have suspended the use of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine after several reports of blood clots in people who received the shot in Europe.
The flurry of suspensions on Monday came after a number of other countries, mostly in Europe, halted their rollouts late last week.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has backed the use of the vaccine and said it has seen no evidence that the shot had caused clotting.
The UN health agency is reviewing the reports related to shot and urged countries not to suspend vaccinations, as its top scientist said people should not panic.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said in a statement that it has not found any evidence of links between reported thrombosis cases and the AstraZeneca shot, saying that the shot’s benefits outweigh the risks and was safe to use. The regulator is reviewing the shot and will issue a decision on any further action on Thursday, it said.

독일이 아스트라제네카(AZ) 백신에 대해 일시적인 접종 중단(pause) 조치를 내렸다고 외신들이 15일(현지 시각) 보도했다. 백신을 맞은 사람 중 일부에서 혈전(血栓·혈관 속의 핏덩이)이 만들어졌다는 보고가 연이어 나온 데 따른 것이다. 프랑스도 같은 날 AZ 백신 접종을 중단한다고 에마뉘엘 마크롱 대통령이 기자회견에서 밝혔다.

보도에 따르면 독일 보건부 대변인은 이날 백신 승인을 담당하는 파울에를리히연구소(PEI)의 권고에 따라 이같이 결정했다고 밝혔다. PEI는 독일과 유럽에서 AZ백신 접종과 관련해 혈액 응고가 시차를 두고 발생했다는 사례가 계속해 보고되는 것을 감안할 때 추가적인 조사가 필요하다는 입장이다.
독일 보건부 측은 “오늘 결정은 순수한 예방조처”라면서 “AZ백신에 대한 신뢰를 유지하기 위해서는 독일과 EU의 전문가들이 더 자세히 조사할 필요가 있다. 부작용이 백신접종의 효과를 넘어서서는 안 된다”고 했다.
마크롱 프랑스 대통령도 15일 기자회견에서 다음날 오후까지 안전 예방 차원에서 AZ 백신 접종을 중단한다고 발표했다고 AP통신은 보도했다. 마크롱 대통령은 “예방 조치 차원에서 AZ 백신 사용을 중단하기로 결정했다. 유럽의약품청(EMA)의 평가가 나온다면 빠른 시일 내에 접종이 재개되기를 바란다”고 했다.
앞서 유럽 여러 국가들은 AZ의 백신 접종을 중단하겠다고 밝힌 바 있다. 덴마크·노르웨이·아이슬란드는 전면적으로 AZ 백신의 접종을 일시 중단했고, 이탈리아·오스트리아·루마니아·룩셈부르크·발트 3국(에스토니아·라트비아·리투아니아)은 특정 제조 번호를 가진 배치(batch·동일한 공정으로 만들어져 균질성을 가지는 의약품의 일정 분량)에 대해 접종을 일시 멈췄다.
그러나 이런 일부 국가의 AZ 백신에 대한 우려와 달리, 앞서 EMA는 성명에서 “백신이 혈전을 일으켰다는 증거는 없으며, 관련 사례에 대한 광범위한 조사가 진행되는 동안 계속해서 AZ 백신을 접종한다”고 밝힌 바 있다. EMA는 EU에서 이 백신을 맞은 약 500만명 중 혈전 발생 사례가 30명 보고됐으며, 이는 자연적인 발생 빈도보다 높지 않은 수준이라고 설명했다.
