뉴욕멜론은행, 암호화폐 도입 계획 소식에…비트코인 사상 최고치
미국 뉴욕멜론은행(BNY Mellon)이 자산운용사 고객을 위해 올해 말 비트코인 등 암호화폐를 보유, 양도, 발행할 계획인 것으로 알려지면서, 비트코인 가격이 사상 최고치를 찍었다.

BNY Mellon to offer bitcoin services, a validation of crypto from a key bank in the financial system
KEY POINTS
Bank of New York Mellon, the nation’s oldest bank, said Thursday that it will begin financing bitcoin and other digital currencies.
It will eventually allow digital currencies to pass through the same financial network it currently uses for more traditional holdings like U.S. Treasury bonds and equities.
“BNY Mellon is proud to be the first global bank to announce plans to provide an integrated service for digital assets,” said Roman Regelman, head of digital at BNY Mellon.
Bitcoin, off to a robust start to 2021, was up 7.7% to around $48,250 at 8:30 a.m. in New York, according to Coin Metrics.

10일(현지시각) 로이터통신에 따르면 뉴욕멜론은행 자산 서비스 및 디지털 사업 부문의 로먼 레겔먼 최고경영자(CEO)는 월스트리트저널(WSJ)과 인터뷰에서 "고객들과 디지털 화폐를 도입하기 위한 논의를 진행 중"이라고 밝혔다. 그는 또 "디지털 자산에 대한 고객 수요가 늘고, 규제의 명확성이 개선되는 등 현재 암호화폐 서비스 제공을 확장할 기회가 생기고 있다"고 했다.
뉴욕멜론은행은 신규 계열사인 디지털 에셋이 연말 암호화폐를 발행하게 될 것이라고 설명했다. 또 뉴욕멜론은행 어드벤스트 솔루션스의 마이크 데미시 대표가 디지털 에셋를 이끌게 될 것이라고 했다.

이같은 소식이 나온 직후 비트코인은 8% 급등, 4만8841달러까지 치솟아 사상 최고치를 찍었다. 11일 오후 11시 현재 4.06% 상승한 4만7475.2달러를 기록하고 있다.
은 앞서 일론 머스크 테슬라 CEO가 15억달러어치 암호화폐를 사들이고, 자사 자동차의 결제 형태로 받아들이겠다고 밝힌 직히면서 강세를 이어가고 있다. 지난달에는 세계 최대 자산운용사인 블랙록이 2개 펀드에 비트코인을 적격 투자로 추가했다. 이날 신용카드 업체인 마스터카드는 올해 자사 네트워크에 일부 암호화폐에 대한 지원을 제공할 계획이라고 밝히기도 했다.
