현대차, 세계 첫 UAM 공항 '에어원' 영국에 공동건설

    현대자동차그룹이 영국에 세계 최초로 조성되는 도심항공모빌리티(UAM·Urban Air Mobility) 공항 건설에 참여한다. 이 공항은 현대차그룹이 2028년 상용화를 목표로 개발 중인 UAM을 비롯해 각종 에어택시와 물류·배송 드론 등이 뜨고 내리는 모빌리티 허브가 될 전망이다.

An industry consortium plans a study followed by a demonstration in a live environment to look at the feasibility of an air taxi service in the South West region of England in response to the UK government’s Future of Flight Challenge. The Atkins-led consortium, which includes Vertical Aerospace and the West of England Combined Authority, was created to find innovative methods of achieving greener flight, finding new ways to travel, increasing mobility, improving connectivity and reducing congestion. The UK government is providing GBP2.5 million.

According to the Atkins press release, the project is expected to take 18 months, and will comprise an assessment of the demand for air taxi services in the South West; development of use cases for the technology; and an evaluation of the integration and impact on the wider transportation network, including the region’s airports, as well as the benefits to cities and residents. It will establish viable markets and businesses cases for these services and seek to understand public perceptions and attitudes towards eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft. These activities aim to culminate in a series of full-system demonstrations in live airspace across the region.

29일 현대차영국법인에 따르면 현대차그룹은 현지 모빌리티업체 `어번에어포트`의 메인 파트너사로서 올해 말 잉글랜드 중부 거점도시 버밍엄 인근의 코번트리시 내 UAM 전용 공항인 `에어원` 건설에 참여한다. 현대차그룹은 어번에어포트가 주도하는 이 사업에 협력업체로 참여해 직접 만든 UAM이 에어원에 이착륙할 수 있도록 돕는다. 현대차는 지난해 8월 UAM 시제품과 인프라스트럭처 개발을 위해 어번에어포트와 업무 협약을 체결했는데, 이번 프로젝트가 그 첫 결과물이다.

어번에어포트는 최근 영국 정부가 공모한 항공 시스템 개발 사업 `퓨처 플라이트 챌린지(Future Flight Challenge)`의 최종 사업자로 낙점됐다. 영국 정부는 이 사업을 통해 에 위치한 코번트리시에 UAM 허브 공항인 에어원을 마련하기로 했다. 올해 11월 코번트리시에서 영국 문화도시 축제가 열리는데, 에어원은 이 행사에 맞춰 공항을 준공할 예정이다. 클러 짐 오보일 코번트리 시의회 내각원은 "에어원 프로젝트를 통해 코번트리가 전기 운송의 미래를 개척해 나가는 선두 도시가 될 것"이라고 말했다.

이번 사업에는 총 3억파운드(약 4600억원)의 비용이 투입된다. 어번에어포트 등 업계가 1억7500만파운드(약 2680억원)를 투자하고 영국 미래산업 전략 펀드가 1억2500만파운드를 댄다. 영국 정부도 120만파운드를 지원한다. 업계 투자금 2680억원 가운데 현대차그룹 측 지원 액수는 알려지지 않았다.

에어원은 전력을 기반으로 운행되는 드론이나 에어택시, UAM 등이 수직으로 이착륙할 수 있는 공항 형태로 건설된다. 탄소중립 정책에 따라 오염물질을 배출하지 않는 UAM만 뜨고 내릴 수 있는데, UAM이 헬기보다 작기 때문에 에어원 용지 규모는 기존 헬기장의 60% 정도 규모로 건설된다.

에어원이 완공되면 전 세계 첫 UAM 전용 공항이 된다. 공항에는 UAM에서 내린 사람이나 물품이 다른 전기차나 친환경 대중교통수단으로 옮겨탈 수 있는 환승시설도 구축된다. 드론 원격제어 설비나 충전, 화물·승객 적재 시설 등도 함께 들어선다. 어번에어포트의 또 다른 협력사이자 드론 개발 업체인 멀로이도 이

번 개발에 뛰어들어 드론을 통한 화물 물류 사업에 참여할 예정이다.

어번에어포트는 코번트리 공항을 시작으로 향후 5년간 전 세계 200곳에 에어원을 구축한다는 목표를 세웠다. 미국항공우주국(NASA)에 따르면 UAM은 단기적으로 최대 5000억달러의 부가가치를 창출할 수 있지만 이 시장이 격적으로 열리려면 UAM이 뜨고 내릴 인프라가 반드시 구축돼야 한다.

SKT joins partnership to develop UAM in South Korea

SK Telecom (SKT) has joined a partnership, composed of Korea Airports Corporation, Hanwha Systems and the Korea Transport Institute,  working on the commercialisation of Urban Air Mobility  (UAM) in South Korea.

    SK텔레콤(SKT)이 한국공항공사, 한화시스템스, 한국교통연구원 등으로 구성된 파트너십을 맺고 국내 도시항공모빌리티(UAM) 상용화에 힘쓰고 있다.

UAM은 일반적으로 도시에서 발견되는 교통 정체에 대응하여 개발된 것으로, 사람들을 항공으로 이동하는 도시 교통 시스템을 가리킨다. UAM은 전기 수직 이착륙(eVTOL) 항공기의 사용을 통해 달성된다.

Developed in response to traffic congestions typically found in cities, UAM refers to urban transportation systems that move people by air.  UAM is achieved through the use of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircrafts.

In an MOU announced today, SKT – under the partnership – will test and build communication network models for UAM. The company plans to create an ideal communications environment for UAM, where stable and reliable connectivity between aircrafts and ground infrastructure is essential.

SKT will also develop a UAM service platform to provide all related services - e.g. booking, transit, etc. - in an integrated manner to provide seamless mobility to customers, allowing them to efficiently travel to a destination by using diverse modes of transportation including UAM, bus, train and personal mobility vehicles.
