미국 내에서 교통체증이 가장 심한 지역 중 하나로 꼽히는 캘리포니아주 남부에 하늘을 나는 ‘에어택시(Air Taxi)’가 등장했다.
15일(현지시각) LA 현지방송 KTLA에 따르면 소형항공운항 스타트업인 '플로트'(FLOAT)는 40대의 경비행기를 투입해 출퇴근 교통 혼잡시간대에 LA 동서부나 남북을 잇는 에어택시 서비스를 운영한다.

KTLA 리포터가 LA 동부 라번에서 서부해안 샌타모니카까지 플로트 에어택시에 탑승해본 결과 71킬로미터 구간을 주파하는 데 불과 20분이 소요된 것으로 알려졌다. 교통체증이 심한 시간대에 차량으로 이동하면 2시간이 넘게 걸리는 구간이다.
플로트 측은 실제 출퇴근 시간대에는 이 구간을 15분 이내로 주파할 수 있다고 말했다. 플로트는 '모든 교통수단 위를 날아다닌다'(Fly Over All Traffic)는 문장에서 따온 명칭이다.

플로트측에 따르면, 이용가격은 구간별로 다르게 부과되지만 평균 월 1250달러를 내면 주중 5일간 왕복으로 에어택시를 이용할 수 있다. 플로트 측은 "평균 편도 가격으로 계산할 경우 약 30달러 이내"라고 밝혔다.
플로트는 현재 소형 비행기 40대를 갖추고 있으며, 1회 비행에 최대 9명이 탑승할 수 있다.
이용객들은 ‘플로트’ 회원으로 가입한 이후, 웹사이트 또는 어플리케이션을 통해 이용 시간과 장소를 사전에 예약해야 한다.
플로트 CEO 아르넬 구이앙은 "매일 두 시간씩 걸려 출퇴근하면서 에어택시 서비스를 떠올리게 됐다"면서 "바쁜 사람들에게 하늘을 날아다니며 일하는 꿈을 이루게 하는 시도"라고 말했다.
