Siberian 'hellmouth' crater caused by melting permafrost is growing fast and could reveal climate changes over the last 200,000 years
- Batagaika Crater sits near the village of Batagai, in the Verkhoyansk district
- It is nearly a mile long, and reaches depths of over 300 feet in some areas
- It's thought growth has been sped up as warming temps melt permafrost
Siberia’s rapidly growing ‘hellmouth’ crater is now giving scientists a glimpse at 200,000 years of climate history.
It already stretches more than half a mile long and nearly 300 feet deep – and, it’s expanding at a rate of roughly 30 to 100 feet (10m to 30m) each year as permafrost continues to thaw.
By looking at the ancient layers exposed in the process, scientists can create a picture of what the landscape once looked like, helping them to predict the changes yet to come.
