Dentist uses a therapy dog to calm anxious patients

MOUNT JULIET, Tenn. — A Tennessee dentist has found a new way to help people cope with their dental anxiety.

Not many are fans of going to the dentist. As many as 20 percent of people won't go because of anxiety and fear, and people with a dental phobia only go when they're in extreme pain.

    미국 테네시 치과의사는 사람들이 그들의 치과를 찾는 불안에 대처하는 것을 도울 새로운 방법을 찾았다.

치과 가는 것을 좋아하는 사람은 거의 없다. 불안과 두려움 때문에 가지 않는 사람이 무려 20%나 되고, 치과 공포증이 있는 사람은 극심한 고통에 시달릴 때만 간다.



드릴 소리는 사람들이 치과의사를 무서워하는 한 가지 이유일 뿐이지만, 고통도 있을 수 있고 불편할 수도 있다.

마이크 글래스미어 박사는 "진정을 했고 괜찮았지만 대기실에 있는 환자들을 위한 다른 무언가가 필요했다"고 말했다

맥은 2살짜리 골든 리트리버로 현재 사람들을 위한 치료견으로 변신했다. 글래스미어는 그를 불안 검사원이라고 부른다.

글래스미어와 그의 아내는 특별한 관심을 가져야 할  아이들 환자들이 있다. 그것이 그들이 맥을 위한 아이디어를 얻은 계기다.

이제 그들의 환자 중 상당수는 특별한 욕구를 가진 아이들과 때때로 그들의 기분을 표현하지 못하는 어른들이지만, 맥은 이를 잘 알고 있다.

The sound of the drill is just one reason people are scared of the dentist, but there can also be pain and you might feel uncomfortable.



“We did sedation and that was fine but I needed something else for the patients in the waiting room something else to calm their nerves,” said Dr. Mike Glasmeier.

And Mack is that something else. He’s a 2-year-old golden retriever from Retrieving Independence in Brentwood, Tennessee.

Mack is now a service dog turned therapy dog for Generations Dental Arts in Mt. Juliet. Glasmeier calls him an anxiety inspector.

Glasmeier and his wife have children with special needs – that’s how they got the idea for Mack. Now, a large group of their patients are children with special needs and adults who sometimes can't express how they feel, but Mack knows.

And just like the dentist, Mack does his rounds — and is just the right prescription every single time.
