Unprecedented triple play, two big innings help top NL Central
leaders for first time
By Stephen J. Nesbitt / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Yadier Molina hit the first pitch he saw Saturday night right on the screws, then watched in disbelief, his hands glued to the sides of his pine-tarred helmet, as the play before him unfolded into the first recorded 4-5-4 triple play in major league history. With St. Louis Cardinals runners on second and third and no outs in the second inning, Neil Walker snared Molina’s screaming line drive and threw to third baseman Jung Ho Kang, doubling off Jhonny Peralta. Jason Heyward, the runner coming from second, had slowed to a walk, thinking the inning was over. Kang made the same mistake, initially, but finally heard his teammates’ calls and threw to second to complete the rare triple play. “Kang took off toward the dugout, and we’re screaming, ‘No! Throw it to us!’ ” shortstop Jordy Mercer said afterward, and manager Clint Hurdle cracked, “I was just hoping [Kang] wouldn’t throw the ball up in the stands.” The Pirates played by the rule of three Saturday. They followed a triple play with three-run innings in the second and sixth, sandwiched around the Cardinals’ five-run fourth, and knocked off the hottest team in baseball, 7-5, before a sellout crowd of 38,068 at PNC Park. After losing the series opener Friday, 8-5, Hurdle noted that while the Pirates collected 12 hits, they were still missing “the big one.” Saturday, they got one big hit after another. Mercer, who entered the game batting .186, socked a bases-loaded, two-run double off the wall in center field in the sixth inning to put the Pirates ahead for good. They defeated their National League Central Division nemesis for the first time in eight games. “Everybody poured in what they had,” Hurdle said. Left fielder Starling Marte, the cleanup hitter batting .344 in his previous 16 games, left after three innings because of severe dizziness. He will be reevaluated before today’s game. http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/pirates/2015/05/09/Pittsburgh-Pirates-beat-St-Louis-Cardinals-7-5/stories/201505090132 |
