Wings of Rescue, a nonprofit organization based in Van Nuys, California, has saved the lives of over 12,000 dogs since 2009 thanks to a team of dedicated pilots who transport shelter dogs to new homes around the country. With the help of other volunteers, Wings of Rescue pilots provide air transport for animals who are close to being euthanized due to lack of space in many of California's high-kill shelters. Thanks to the time and dedication of the volunteers, each year thousands of dogs are given new chances at life as they are flown across state lines to new owners, foster homes, humane societies, and rescue centers that have more room for these precious pooches.

"We either do it or the dogs die, so the choice is clear," Wings of Rescue president and co-founder Yehuda Netanel told the Los Angeles Daily News. Since he first started transporting shelter dogs as one lone pilot six years ago, he's seen the tremendous impact that the organization has had as it's grown in size. This year alone, he expects to help 7,000 pets reach their new homes.

Wings of Rescue uses private planes and charter planes to transport the dogs, with flights costing about $80 per dog. The all-volunteer organization is funded completely by donations, so check out their website if you're interested in contributing to their wonderful cause.
