구글이 21일(미국현지시간)부터 스마트폰과 모바일 위주로 전면 개편된다. 기존의 PC 중심에서 모바일중심으로 일대 혁명적 변신을 하는 것이다. 또 검색기능에서도 모바일 친화적으로 만든 웹 사이트를 상위에 배치한다. 이에 따라 스마트 폰으로 접근하는 사용자가 PC사용자 보다 훨씬 더 편리해진다. 시장에서는 이번 구글의 개편을 ‘아마겟돈’에서 따온 모바일겟돈(mobile-geddon)’으로 비견하고 있다. 요한계시록 16장에는 시간의 종말에 벌어질 대규모 전투가 언급되어 있다. 지상의 왕들과 신이 벌이는 최후의 일대 결전이다. 그 장소가 바로 아마겟돈이다. 아마겟돈이라는 이름은 구약성서에서 몇 차례 중대한 전투가 벌어졌던 므깃도라는 지명에서 유래했다. 여기에 빗대 결정적인 전투나 충돌이 벌어질 때 아마겟돈이라는 말을 사용한다. 구글의 모바일 위주 개편이 그만큼 큰 변화라는 것이다. 데니 설리반 서치 엔진 랜드 에디터는 “이번 개편은 사람들이 모바일에 더 친숙해지길 원하는 구글의 뜻을 담고 있다”고 지적하면서 “21일 구글의 검색 개편은 웹 개발자들 사이에서 큰 혼란과 광란을 야기할 것”이라고 말했다. Beginning Tuesday, Google will alter how it ranks websites in mobile searches based on mobile-friendly criteria. The change was announced in February, and the Web giant said the shift will make it easier for consumers to get "relevant, high-quality search results that are optimized for their devices." With Google's change imminent, social media has latched on to the shift as a potential "mobilegeddon" for small businesses.
