"미안하지만 제 생애 두 번째로 기억에 남을 샷입니다." 19일(한국시간) 미국 하와이주 호놀룰루에서 끝난 미국여자프로골프(LPGA) 투어 롯데 챔피언십에서 우승한 김세영(22·미래에셋)의 말이다. 김세영은 이날 최종라운드 18번 홀(파4)에서 약 6ｍ 거리의 칩샷을 넣어 가까스로 연장에 들어갔고 연장전에서는 154야드(약 140ｍ) 거리에서 시도한 두 번째 샷을 그대로 홀에 들어가게 하면서 짜릿한 우승을 맛봤다. 게다가 상대는 전 세계 랭킹 1위 박인비(27·KB금융그룹)였다. 두 번이나 믿기지 않는 샷을 선보이며 LPGA 투어 신인으로 첫해 벌써 2승을 수확한 김세영이지만 그는 "생애 최고의 샷은 따로 있다"고 공식 기자회견에서 말했다. 우승 트로피를 들고 환호하는 김세영 << LOTTE 제공>> 김세영은 "2013년 한국여자프로골프(KLPGA) 투어에서 17번 홀 홀인원으로 우승한 적이 있다"며 "그것이 나에게는 가장 기억에 남는 샷"이라고 즐거워했다. 김세영이 말한 2013년 대회는 그해 9월 한화금융 클래식으로 그는 당시 17번 홀에서 홀인원을 기록해 선두였던 유소연을 한 타 차이로 압박했고 결국 18번 홀에서 동타를 이뤄 연장에 돌입, 대역전극을 완성한 바 있다. 김세영은 "오늘 샷 이글이 두 번째, 정규 라운드 18번 홀의 칩샷이 세 번째로 기억에 남을 것 같다"며 웃었다. 그는 4라운드 마지막 홀인 18번 홀 티샷이 물에 빠진 장면에 대해서는 "'도대체 무슨 운명인가'하는 생각이 들었다"며 "하지만 곧바로 반전이 일어났고 사실 지금도 무슨 일이 벌어졌는지 믿기 어렵다"고 소감을 밝혔다. 김세영은 박인비와 11언더파로 동률이던 18번 홀 티샷을 물에 빠트려 패색이 짙었으나 칩샷으로 파를 지키면서 힘겹게 승부를 연장으로 몰고 갔다. 그는 "칩샷을 하기 전에는 그것이 마지막 기회였기 때문에 어떻게든 공을 홀에 넣겠다는 생각뿐이었다"며 "연장전 샷 이글을 하기 전에는 7번과 8번 아이언 사이에서 고민하다가 8번을 택했는데 결과적으로 주효했다"고 설명했다. 김세영은 경기가 끝난 뒤 "(박)인비 언니가 어떻게 그게 들어가느냐며 축하를 해줬다"고 소개하기도 했다. 이달 초 끝난 시즌 첫 메이저 대회 ANA 인스퍼레이션에서는 3라운드까지 3타 차 선두를 달리고도 리드를 지키지 못하고 4위에 머문 그는 "사실 그 대회 이후 잠을 제대로 못 잤다"며 "메이저 우승 기회를 놓쳤다는 사실이 매우 안타까웠다"고 털어놨다. 김세영은 "하지만 동시에 가능성도 확인할 수 있었던 대회였다"고 의미를 부여하며 "그런 경험이 나에게는 앞으로 큰 도움이 될 것"이라고 다부지게 말했다. Sei Young Kim holed out her second shot, an 8-iron from 154 yards, on the first playoff hole to defeat Rolex Rankings No. 3 Inbee Park and claim her second-career LPGA victory at the LOTTE Championship Presented by HERSHEY. “I don’t know what happened today,” Kim said with a huge smile in the media center following her round. “There was 140 meters, so I think about between 7 or 8. And so I chose 8 normal, and it was good choice.” Playing first, Kim sent her ball skyward and it took two hops before nestling in the bottom of the cup. Kim seemed to be in disbelief before finally throwing her hands in the air and high fiving her caddie. When Park was unable to match the feat, Kim got to take a champion’s walk to 18 to retrieve her ball from the bottom of the cup. “Today I didn’t see it coming,” Kim admitted through her interpreter. “I don’t know what I’ve done again to deserve this, but I feel like every time I win a tournament I have to do something crazy or overcome some type of obstacles. I don’t know why it keeps happening, but it feels good.” Kim got into the playoff with a little bit of magic when, after finding the water with her drive on the 18th in regulation, she got up-and-down for par thanks to a chip-in from 18 feet. “On the 18th when I hit my hybrid I thought there was no way that it would fall into the hazard. I thought it would come short. When it happened I just tried to get myself under control because something crazy just happened to me,” Kim said through a translator. “I thought maybe something crazy will happen again, so I tried to get myself under control and calm myself, and look what happened.“ Fellow playoff competitor Park came away impressed after playing with Kim for the final two rounds. “Obviously able to chip in and hole out from there, she’s a good player,” Park said. “She’s already won twice this year and she has definitely proven herself that she can compete out here. She’s a great player; I think she’s a great fighter.” I.K. I won that tournament by making a hole-in-one on 17, so that was probably my most memorable shot.” bouncing back from a major disappointment Throughout the week, Sei Young Kim pointed to her disappointing final round 75 at the ANA Inspiration as the motivating factor for her strong play. “As I mentioned, it was a motivating factor for me,” Kim said through her interpreter. “After ANA leading up to this tournament I had tough time sleeping because that was my first major opportunity to win a major tournament on the LPGA Tour. I almost felt a little bit of guilt that I let that slip away. At the same time, I saw the possibility and the potential that I thought that belonged there and that can win a major championship in the future.
