Bitcoin was last trading almost 9% higher at a price of $15,233, according to data from industry website CoinDesk.
The world’s best-known cryptocurrency has been on a tear in 2020, more than doubling in value year-to-date.
Some analysts have linked its rise to unprecedented stimulus from global governments and central banks.

Bitcoin’s price climbed above $15,000 on Thursday, hitting a level not seen since January 2018 amid U.S. presidential election uncertainty.
The world’s best-known cryptocurrency was last trading almost 9% higher at a price of $15,233, according to data from industry website CoinDesk.
Bitcoin has been on a tear in 2020, more than doubling in value year-to-date. Its meteoric rise comes on the back of unprecedented stimulus from global governments and central banks during the coronavirus pandemic, which some industry insiders believe has made the virtual currency more attractive than fiat currencies like the dollar.
“Bitcoin’s creation was in part due to fears that increased fiscal stimulus is devaluing currencies globally,” said Simon Peters, a cryptoasset analyst at investment platform eToro. “As a result, when central banks announce extensive plans to pump money into economies, many investors in the crypto community take this as a major bitcoin buy signal.”

비트코인, 2년10개월만에 최고가 경신…1700만원선 돌파
미국 대통령 선거가 막바지를 향하고 있는 가운데 비트코인 가격이 1만5000달러를 돌파하며 지난 2018년 1월 이후 최고가를 경신했다. 암호화폐 시장의 대장주격인 비트코인은 이달 내내 급등세를 나타내고 있다.
5일(현지시각) CNBC는 암호화폐 전문매체 코인데스크를 인용해 이날 비트코인 가격이 1만5233달러(한화 1712만원)로 전날보다 9% 가까이 뛰었다고 보도했다.

CNBC는 비트코인이 올 들어 가격이 두 배 이상 뛰었으며 이 배경에는 대형 투자자들의 자금이 대거 유입됐기 때문으로 분석했다. 특히 코로나19로 인해 각국이 대규모 부양책을 내놓으면서 명목화폐보다 비트코인에 대한 관심이 집중되고 있다는 설명이다.
여기에 최근 전자결제 업체 페이팔과 페이스북 관련 소식도 비트코인 시장에 호재로 작용했다. 특히 페이팔의 영향이 컸다. 페이팔은 지난 21일 공식 발표에서 "내년 초부터 페이팔 이용자는 자사 네트워크에 있는 2600만개의 가맹점에서 암호화폐로 물건을 구매할 수 있게 된다"고 밝혔다. 취급 암호화폐는 비트코인, 이더리움, 비트코인캐시, 라이트코인 4종이다
. 페이스북은 리브라 어소시에이션과 자체 암호화폐인 리브라 개발을 지속하고 있다고 밝혔다.
영국 소재 자산 거래 플랫폼 이토로(eToro)의 애널리스트 사이먼 피터스는 "미 선거가 막바지에 접어들면서 경기부양안의 세부사안도 점차 분명해질 것"이라면서 "어떤 부양안이든 미국 달러 약세를 부추기고 앞으로 비트코인 가격의 상승 동력으로 작용할 수 있다"고 말했다.
