영국 일간 데일리메일에 따르면 최근 뉴욕 레스토랑 ‘발타자르’의 주인 키스 맥널리는 자신의 인스타그램에 매니저의 실수로 손님에게 와인이 잘못 서빙돼 발생한 일화를 공유했다.

맥널리에 따르면 이 사고는 어느 날 밤 4명의 월스트리트 사업가들이 레스토랑에서 가장 비싼 2000달러(약 225만원)짜리 레드와인 ‘보르도 샤또 무똥 로스칠드’를 주문하면서 시작했다. 주문이 들어오자 한 매니저는 해당 고급 와인을 디캔터에 부었다.
그는 “이와 거의 동시에 다른 테이블에 있던 젊은 커플이 레스토랑에서 가장 싼 18달러(약 2만원)짜리 와인 삐노 누아르를 시켰는데, 이들 역시 와인을 디캔터에 따라줄 것을 요청했다”며 “이 극과 극인 두 와인들이 디캔터에 있었다”고 전했다.
매니저가 두 와인을 혼동해 웨이터에게 와인을 잘못 전달했고 웨이터는 사업가들에게 2000달러짜리 보르도 대신 저렴한 삐노가 들어있는 디캔터를 집어 ‘정중하게’ 따랐다.
맥널리는 “매니저에 따르면 모임을 주최한 사업가는 자신이 ‘와인 감식가’라며 뽐낸 뒤 값싼 와인을 맛본 후 ‘숙성’에 대한 찬사를 했다”고 말했다.
18달러짜리 삐노를 주문한 커플은 2000달러짜리 무똥 로스칠드를 대접받았다. 싼 와인이라고 생각한 그들은 첫 입을 마시고 마치 비싼 와인을 먹는 척 패러디하며 장난쳤다.
두 테이블에 와인을 전달한지 5분이 지나 매니저들은 그들이 실수했음을 깨달았다. 겁이 날 정도로 놀란 그들은 집에 있던 맥널리에게 전화해 자초지종을 설명하고 빨리 레스토랑에 와줄 것을 부탁했다.

맥널리는 이미 기분이 좋아진 사업가들의 분위기를 망칠까봐 `매니저의 실수를 솔직히 밝힐 것인지, 이들이 값싼 와인을 기쁜 마음으로 계속 마시도록 할 것인지` 깊은 고민에 빠졌다.
그는 “후자를 택하는 것이 분명 더 쉬울 것 같았다”며 “비싼 와인 마시듯 연기하며 즐거워하는 커플에게서 보르도를 돌려받는다는 것은 상상할 수 없을 정도로 힘들었다”고 털어놨다.
결국 맥널리는 양쪽 모두에게 그들이 실수했음을 알리는 쪽을 택했다. 맥널리는 사업가에게 새로 와인을 갖다주고 커플에게는 계속 마시던 와인을 마시도록 했다.
월스트리트 사업가는 “어쩐지 그 와인이 무똥 로스칠드같지 않다고 생각했다”며 멋쩍게 웃었고 일행들은 고개를 끄덕이며 그의 말에 공감했다고 말했다.
젊은 커플은 웨이터의 실수로 18달러짜리 와인 대신 무려 2000달러의 보르도 와인을 마셨다는 행운에 어리둥절한 반응을 보였다.
커플은 맥널리에게 “마치 은행이 실수로 우리에게 큰 이익을 준 것 같다”고 농담을 건넸다.
맥널리는 인스타그램 게시글에 “문제는 2000달러를 깎아준 것은 은행이 아니라 나라는 사실”이라며 “양쪽 모두 그날 밤 식당을 행복하게 떠났지만, 둘 중 젊은 커플이 더 기분 좋게 떠났을 것”이라고 전했다.
