세계 최고 부자인 왕(world’s richest king)은 어느 나라 누구일까. 흔히 사우디아라비아 또는 브루나이 국왕을 연상하기 쉽다. 정답(right answer)은 태국의 마하 와치랄롱꼰(68) 국왕이다.
2016년 왕위에 오른(ascend to the throne) 뒤 왕실자산국이 관리하던 모든 재산을 개인 소유로 이전시켰다(transfer all its holdings to his personal ownership). 군부가 문민정부 승계를 붕괴시키고(topple a succession of civilian governments) 의회와 국영 기관들을 장악한(seize control of the parliament and state institutions) 후 국왕의 비호에 대한 답례로 적극 협조했다(fall in line).

게다가 군부 정권은 올해 경제가 8% 위축될 것으로 예상됨에도(be forecasted to shrink by 8%) 예산에 국왕 경호, 여행, ‘특수 활동(special activities)’ 비용 명목으로 10억달러(약 1조1500억원)를 추가 배정했다. 내년 예산은 16% 더 늘릴 예정이고, 왕실 소속 38대의 항공기·헬리콥터 유지 비용도 지원한다.

국왕의 이권은 태국 경제 생활의 거의 모든 주요 분야에 개입돼 있다고(be involved in almost every significant area of Thai economic life) 보면 된다. 방콕 중심가 등의 소유 토지 가치만 320억달러(약 37조원) 상당으로 추산된다. 최대 투자 대상은 산업 재벌(industrial conglomerate)인 시암상업은행과 시암시멘트그룹으로, 국왕 보유 지분 34%의 평가액이 80억달러(약 9조원)에 달한다. 미국 LA타임스에 따르면, 지난해 개인 수입으로 송금된 배당금(dividend)만 3억4200만달러(약 3910억원)였다.
와치랄롱꼰 국왕은 연중 상당 기간을 태국이 아닌 독일의 호화 호텔에서 첩(妾)들과 노닥거리며 보낸다(fool around with his concubines). 수십 명의 몸종과 경호원 수행단(retinue of scores of attendants and security)이 따라가 그 짓거리 수발을 든다. 그의 재산은 사우디아라비아 국왕, 브루나이 술탄, 영국 여왕의 재산을 모두 합친 것보다 더 많다고 한다.
