무관심도 치매 징후…그 밖에 위험 신호 4가지
지나친 무관심이 치매의 징후일 수 있다는 연구 결과가 나왔다.
미국 캘리포니아대학교 샌프란시스코신경과학연구소 연구팀이 노인 2018명(평균 연령 74세)을 대상으로 한 연구 결과, 무관심이 가장 심한 사람은 무관심이 가장 경미한 사람보다 치매 위험이 80% 높은 것으로 나타났다.
연구팀은 “전체적인 결과는 무관심이 치매로 이행되는 과정의 아주 초기 단계에서 나타나는 징후일 수 있음을 보여준다”고 밝혔다. 이번 연구 결과(Apathy and risk of probable incident dementia among community-dwelling older adults)는 ‘뉴롤로지(Neurology)’에 실렸다.

국내에서도 노인들의 치매가 사회 문제로 떠오르고 있다. 통계에 따르면, 70대 노인들의 경우 10명 중 1명이 치매 환자다. 이런 치매도 초기에 발견하면 치료 확률이 그만큼 높아진다.
치매 초기를 판단할 수 있는 증상들은 어떤 게 있을까. 이와 관련해 ‘프리벤션닷컴’이 소개한 치매 환자의 초기 증상 4가지를 알아본다.
1. 우울 증상
연구에 따르면, 우울증을 앓고 있는 중장년은 치매에 걸릴 확률이 그렇지 않은 사람들보다 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이는 50세 이상 2400명을 7년간 관찰해 얻어낸 결과다.
연구팀은 연구시작 시점에 이들을 상대로 정신과 신체 건강을 묻는 설문조사를 실시했다. 그 결과, 연구초기 단계의 설문조사에서 우울증을 호소했던 사람들은 7년 후 치매증상을 보인 경우가 2배 많은 것으로 나타났다.
2. 입맛 변화
연구에 따르면, 먹고 싶은 음식들이 크게 변한다면 치매의 초기 증상을 의심해 볼 수 있다. 이는 입맛과 식욕을 조절하는 두뇌 부위가 질병으로 손상되고 있음을 알려주는 신호인 것이다.
일본에서 나온 연구에 따르면, 일부 치매 환자들은 부패하거나 유통기한이 지난 음식을 먹는 것으로 나타났다.
3. 범죄적 이상 행동
물건을 훔치거나, 특정 장소에 무단 침입하고, 교통신호를 위반하는 등의 범죄적 행동도 치매 초기 증상들이다. 치매는 사회적 규칙을 인식하고 지키게 하는 두뇌 영역을 훼손한다는 것이 과학자들의 주장이다.
4. 저장 강박
가령 신문을 매일 사서 읽지는 않고 집에 차곡차곡 쌓아두는 행동을 한다면 치매를 의심해 봐야 한다. 연구에 따르면, 사재기와 강박에서 비롯되는 의례적인 행동들은 치매와 관련이 있다.

The research team looked to see whether developing dementia was linked to apathy. People with apathy often have a lack of interest in the world around them, with signs of apathy including stopping taking part in normal activities, showing little emotion, and a lack of energy. In this study, the team used a questionnaire designed to evaluate apathy in over 2,000 people and to discriminate apathy from depression and anxiety.
They divided the volunteers into groups corresponding to low, moderate, or severe apathy. The team determined whether people developed dementia with an algorithm based on information on dementia medication use, hospital records, or a significant decline in memory and thinking.
The team followed participants over nine years and found 381 volunteers developed likely dementia. They found that severe apathy was linked with an increased risk of dementia compared to low apathy. Apathy was also associated with worse memory and thinking at the beginning of the study, but not rate of change over time.
