집안 구석구석 비행하며 보안임무 수행
아마존 자회사인 링(Ring)이 최근 실내 보안용 드론형 카메라 ‘링 올웨이즈 홈 캠(Ring Always Home Cam)’을 공개했다고 CNN 등 매체들이 보도했다.
링 올웨이즈는 카메라를 장착한 드론형 스마트 홈 기기이다. 사전에 정해진 구역을 비행하고 집안 구석구석을 관찰함으로써 실시간 비디오 스트리밍을 제공한다. 집주인은 이를 통해 집을 비운 동안에도 창문이 열려 있는지, 가스불 등이 켜져 있는지 등을 확인할 수 있다. 실내 보안을 위해 더 이상 여러 대의 카메라를 설치할 필요가 없어진 셈이다.

The $250 drone, called Ring Always Home Cam, is among a slew of products unveiled during Amazon's invitation-only online hardware event.
The drone is small and light, with a high-definition camera, and it can automatically fly on preset paths to specific spots in your home, streaming video to your smartphone of what it sees along the way. Users can set up paths for the drone via a smartphone app, or if the drone detects motion in a part of your home it can fly on its own to that spot and take video of what's going on. Set for release next year, the drone is meant for indoor use only, and it can be set to work with the Ring Alarm system so that it will fly a preset route if the alarm is triggered. 드론형 카메라는 사람이나 애완동물 등 예상치 못한 사물을 피할 수 있도록 회피기능을 갖췄다. 충전을 위해 스스로 도킹스테이션으로 복귀하며, 일반 드론처럼 수동조종은 지원하지 않는다. 현재 공개된 버전은 시제품으로, 오는 2021년 249달러(약 29만원)에 공식 출시될 예정이다.

일각에선 이 카메라가 집을 감시한다는 점에 대해 심각한 사생활 침해라며 우려를 제기하고 있다. 영국 사생활보호 단체인 빅 브라더 워치(Big Brother Watch)는 “링 올웨이즈 홈 캠은 아마존의 가장 소름끼치는 감시제품”이라고 꼬집었다.
이에 아마존 측은 올웨이즈 홈 캠이 비행 중에만 녹화를 실시하며, 충전소에 머무는 동안에는 카메라가 차단된다고 밝혔다. 더욱이 이 드론은 가까이 있다는 사실을 알 수 있을 만큼 소리가 크다고 설명했다.
