   올해 연말에 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 백신이 출시되더라도 코로나19 이전의 정상적인 일상으로 되돌아가는 것은 오는 2021년 말은 되어야 가능할 것이라는 전망이 나왔다.

앤서니 파우치 미국 국립보건원(NIH) 산하 알레르기·전염병 연구소장은 11일(현지 시각) MSNBC 인터뷰에서 "올해 말이나 내년 초에는 백신이 나올 것으로 확신한다"면서도 "만약 코로나19 이전의 정상적인 생활 수준으로 되돌아가는 것을 의미한다면 2021년 말이 될 것"이라고 했다. 인구의 다수가 백신을 접종하고 보호받는 기간이 따로 소요된다는 이유다.

그는 전날 하버드 의대 교수들과 간담회에서도 "올 가을·겨울 동안 웅크린 채 잘 넘겨야 한다. 쉽지 않을 것"이라고 말했다.

이어 파우치 소장은 일부 주(州)에서 영화관, 체육관, 미용실이 문을 열고 특히 제한된 식당 실내 식사를 허용하고 있는 것과 관련해서도 우려의 목소리를 냈다. 그는 "실내는 (그런 활동으로) 위험을 절대적으로 증가시킨다"며 "가을·겨울이 되면 우려를 더욱 자아내게 될 것"이라고 했다.

파우치는 실내 활동을 재개하는 가장 안전한 방법은 지역사회 전파를 가능한 가장 낮은 수준으로 낮추는 것이라고 강조했다. 다만 야외에 있는 것 역시 보호 장막을 쳐 주지는 않는다고 했다. 그는 정치 집회를 거론하면서 "특히 군중 속에서 마스크를 착용하지 않는다면 그게 야외라고 해서 보호되는 것은 아니다"라고 밝혔다.
