   임종이 임박해 의식이 없는 상태에서도 소리를 듣는다는 연구 결과가 나왔다.

캐나다 브리티시 컬럼비아 대학교 연구진은 호스피스 병동의 환자를 대상으로 뇌파를 분석했다. 환자들이 아직 의식이 있을 때 측정한 뇌파와 임종이 임박했을 때의 뇌파를 비교했다.

연구진이 임종 직전의 환자들에게 다양한 주파수의 소리를 들려주자 뇌파가 반응을 보였다. 본인이 아직 의식이 있을 때는 물론이고 건강한 다른 사람의 반응과 비슷한 패턴을 보였다.

연구진은 “자연사 몇 시간 전, 대부분 환자는 물리적 자극에 반응하지 않는 의식 불명 상태에 접어들지만, 그 상황에서도 뇌는 소리에 반응한다”면서 “임종을 앞둔 환자가 사랑하는 이들의 목소리를 듣는 것이 큰 위안이 될 수 있다는 점을 호스피스 의료진은 고려해야 한다”고 강조했다.

이번 연구의 주저자 엘리자베스 블런든은 “죽어가는 이들이 소리를 듣는다는 건 사실로 드러났지만 목소리를 구별하고, 내용을 이해하고, 기억하는지를 확인하는 것은 향후 연구 과제”라고 말했다.

그는 “그러나 이번 연구는 임종을 앞둔 이에게 말을 건네는 것은 의미 있는 일이라는 점을 뒷받침한다”면서 “우리가 이야기하면 환자의 뇌에서 무언가 작용이 일어나기 때문”이라고 강조했다.

이번 연구(Electrophysiological evidence of preserved hearing at the end of life)는 ‘사이언티픽 리포츠(Scientific Reports)’가 게재하고 통신사 UPI가 소개했다.
