이탈리아 출신의 영화음악 거장 엔니오 모리코네가 93세를 일기로 별세했다고 ANSA 통신 등이 6일(현지시간) 보도했다.

Ennio Morricone, the  Italian composer whose atmospheric scores for spaghetti westerns and some 500 films by a Who’s Who of international directors made him one of the world’s most versatile and influential creators of music for the modern cinema, died on Monday in Rome. He was 91. His death was confirmed by his lawyer, Giorgio Assumma, who said that Mr. Morricone had been admitted to the hospital last week after falling and fracturing his femur. To many cineastes, Maestro Morricone (pronounced more-ah-CONE-ay) was a unique talent,crafting melodic accompaniments to comedies, thrillers and historical dramas by Bernardo Bertolucci, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Terrence Malick, Roland Joffé, Brian De Palma, Barry Levinson, Mike Nichols, John Carpenter, Quentin Tarantino and other filmmakers. Mr. Morricone scored many popular films of the past 40 years: Édouard Molinaro’s “La Cage aux Folles” (1978), Mr. Carpenter’s “The Thing” (1982), Mr. De Palma’s “The Untouchables” (1987), Roman Polanski’s “Frantic” (1988), Giuseppe Tornatore’s “Cinema Paradiso” (1988), Wolfgang Petersen’s “In the Line of Fire” (1993), and Mr. Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” (2015). 모리코네는 시네마 천국, 미션, 황야의 무법자, 원스 어폰 어 타임 인 아메리카 등의 주제곡을 작곡하는 등 500편이 넘는 영화음악을 만든 거장이다.

ANSA 통신에 따르면 모리코네는 낙상으로 대퇴부 골절상을 입어 병원 치료를 받아오다가 전날 밤 숨을 거뒀다.

1928년 이탈리아 로마에서 태어난 모리코네는 9살 때에 산타 체칠리아의 국립 음악원(The Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia)에 들어가 고프레도 페트라시(Goffredo Petrassi) 지도하에 트럼펫과 작곡, 합창곡과 지휘를 배웠다.

이후 첫 콘서트 작품을 1950년대 말에 썼고, RAI(이탈리아 방송 사업자)와 RCA-이탈리아 편곡자로 일했다. 1961년, 루치아노 살체(Luciano Salce) 감독의 영화 '일 페데달로(Il Federale)' 작곡가로서의 경력을 시작했다.

1964년 이탈리아 감독 세르지오 레오네에 의해 발탁돼 '석양의 무법자'와 '원스 어폰 어 타임 인 아메리카' 등의 영화음악을 작곡하는 등 오랫동안 그와 협력관계를 유지했다.

이후 '천국의 나날들'(1978), '미션'(1986년), '언터처블'(1987년), '벅시'(1991년), '말레나'(2000)로 총 다섯 차례 아카데미상에 노미네이트 됐지만 매번 수상에 실패하는 불운을 겪었다.

하지만 2007년 아카데미 시상식에서 평생공로상을 받았고, 2016년에는 '헤이트풀 에이트'(감독 쿠엔틴 타란티노)로 여섯번 째 도전 만에 아카데미 음악상을 수상하며 한을 풀었다.
