India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to extend the world's biggest coronavirus lockdown by a fortnight amid a rising death toll.
A three-week lockdown had been due to end on Tuesday, but several chief ministers from India's 29 states and territories have been pressing Modi to prolong restrictions for the 1.3 billion population.

Two states - Odisha and Punjab - have already extended the lockdown by around two weeks, but critics say a nationwide policy is needed to stop people moving between states and potentially taking the virus with them.

美 사망 2만460명, 伊 넘어 세계 1위…50개주 재난지역 지정
미국 내 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 누적 사망자 수가 11일(현지시간) 기준 2만 명을 넘어섰다.
미국 존스홉킨스대학은 이날 미국의 코로나19 환자는 52만2286명, 사망자는 2만283명으로, 사망자 수가 이탈리아를 추월했다고 발표했다.

실시간 국제통계 사이트 월드오미터(동부시간 오후 5시30분 기준) 또한 미국의 코로나19 환자는 52만9154명, 사망자는 2만460명으로 집계했다.
이날 기준 이탈리아 내 코로나19 사망자는 1만 9468명으로, 미국은 이탈리아를 넘어서 코로나19 희생자 최다 보유국이라는 오명을 안게 됐다.
앞서 미국은 지난달 26일 중국의 코로나19 확진자 수를 추월해, 세계에서 가장 많은 확진자를 기록한 나라로 집계된 바 있다.
존스홉킨스와 월드오미터의 집계에 따르면 미국 사망자는 전 세계 사망자(10만8178명) 5명 중 1명꼴이다.
로이터 통신은 “미국에서 코로나19 환자가 정점에 가까워졌다는 전망이 나오고 있음에도 불구하고 사망자가 2만명을 넘어서며 세계에서 가장 많은 희생자를 낸 나라가 됐다”고 전했다.
WP는 “코로나19 진단이 제대로 실시되지 않은 데다 병원 바깥에서 발생한 사망자의 경우 정확한 사망 원인을 확인하기 어렵다는 점에서 전문가들은 미국의 사망자 통계가 더욱 악화할 것으로 우려한다”고 보도했다.

미국 내에서 가장 많은 희생자를 기록 중인 뉴욕주에서는 이날도 코로나19 확진자 중 700명 이상이 사망해 누적 사망자는 8623명으로 늘었다.
뉴욕주 다음으로 큰 피해를 본 뉴저지주에서는 하루 사이 251명이 사망해 누적 사망자가 2831명으로 늘었고, 코로나19 확진자는 3599명 늘어난 5만8151명을 기록했다.
이런 가운데 도널드 트럼프 대통령은 이날 와이오밍주의 연방 재난지역 선포 요청을 승인했다. 이에 따라 미 전체 50개 주가 재난 지역으로 지정됐다.
CNN 방송은 전염병으로 미 50개 주 모두가 재난 지역으로 지정된 것은 역사상 처음이라고 보도했다.
연방 재난지역으로 선포되면 지역주민 보호 활동에 연방정부의 재정이 지원되며, 현지 공무원에게는 주민을 보호할 비상 권한이 부여된다.
