The 26-year-old from South Korea sank a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to win the largest check in women’s golf history, taking the $1.5 million at the CME Group Tour Championship at Tiburón Golf Club.

Kim came to the 18th with a two-shot lead over playing partner Nelly Korda, but did not know that Charley Hull had finished at 17 under to tie her.

CME Group Tour Championship
Total purse: $5 million

1st place: $1.5 million
2nd: $480,000
3rd: $310,882
4th: $226,432
5th: $175,912

“I was thinking ‘What if Nelly made (a birdie on No. 18),” said Kim, who won for the 10th time in her career and third time this season. “I tried to make two putts. That was my mindset. After I made it, I saw the leaderboard. I didn’t know that Charley (Hull) finished at 17 under. So what if I didn’t make it, we would have gone to a playoff and that wouldn’t have been good for me. So, wow.”

Caddie Paul Fusco wasn’t going to let Kim know what was at stake.

“I knew she had to make it, but I was never going to tell her that she had to make this,” he said. “That would’ve created too much pressure.”

Hull, who won the tournament with a record 19 under in 2016, shot a 66 that included birdies on the final three holes to get to 17 under to tie Kim.

“They’re kind of always in my mind around this golf course,” Hull said of recalling 2016. “Kind of (No.) 15 I looked at the leaderboard and I thought I’ve got a chance here if I make – if I birdie in. Didn’t birdie 15, but birdied 16, 17, and 18. I gave it my best shot.”

Kim struck the putt and the ball fell into the left side of the cup.

“So I just try and make the right distance; made it,” she said. “It’s unbelievable. I was like so emotional. Almost crying. But I try I’m not going to cry.”

Jin Young Ko, the Player of the Year who also won the Vare Trophy for lowest stroke average on Sunday, and Mi Hyang Lee doused Kim with water after she finished.
