South Korea tells Japan it won't let GSOMIA intel-sharing pact expire for now

In an apparent reversal, South Korea told Japan on Friday afternoon that it won’t let a key intelligence pact expire for the time being, a Japanese government source said.

NHK "한국, 지소미아 종료 안한다…일본 정부에 방침 전달" 일본 NHK 방송이 한국 정부가 한일군사정보보호협정(GSOMIA·지소미아)을 종료하지 않는다는 뜻을 전달했다고 보도했다. 방송은 22일 오후 “실효가 임박한 일·한 지소미아에 대해 한국 정부가 협정 종료 통고를 정지한다는 방침을 일본 정부에 전해온 것으로 확인됐다"며 "이로써 협정 효력은 유지되게 된다"고 전했다.
한편 청와대는 22일 오후 6시 지소미아 종료 여부를 최종 발표한다. 애초 청와대는 '일본의 태도 변화 없이는 지소미아 종료가 불가피하다'는 입장이었으나, 일본과의 물밑 접촉 및 내부 논의를 거쳐 조건부로 종료 시한을 미루는 안으로 입장을 선회한 것으로 알려졌다. 홍주희 기자 honghong@joongang.co.kr 중앙일보 |

The General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) was set to expire at midnight after Seoul announced in August it would terminate it in response to Tokyo’s tightening of controls on technology exports to South Korea, citing security reasons, amid long-running tensions over wartime issues.
Japan and the United States had been urging South Korea in recent weeks to renew the 2016 accord, considering it crucial in the face of the threat posed by North Korean missiles and nuclear weapons.
