삼성그룹, 사우디에 초대형 엔터테인먼트 신도시 건설
삼성그룹이 사우디아라비아에 초대형 엔터테인먼트 신도시를 조성한다. 그동안 이재용 삼성그룹 부회장이 사우디 건설 사업에 공을 들여온 터라, 그 성과를 거두기 시작했다는 평가다.
29일 외신과 건설업계에 따르면 삼성그룹은 29~30일(현지시각) 사우디아라비아 키디야에서 ‘키디야 엔터테인먼트 시티’ 사업 추진 양해각서를 체결한다. 체결식에는 이영호 삼성물산 건설부문 사장이 참석한다고 전해진다. 이 사업은 삼성물산 건설부문이 주축을 맡고, 삼성전자 등이 뒷받침하는 구조로 알려졌다.

키디야는 사우디아라비아 수도 리야드에서 40㎞가량 떨어진 곳에 위치한다. 삼성은 이곳에 테마파크와 사파리, 모터스포츠, 워터파크, 쇼핑몰, 주택 등으로 구성된 신도시를 건설할 계획이다. 신도시 면적은 334㎢로 서울시(605㎢)의 절반을 넘는다. 사업 1단계가 2022년 끝나고, 최종 완공 시점은 2035년이다.

앞서 이 부회장은 지난 6월 한국에서 무함마드 빈 살만 사우디아라비아 왕세자와 만나 키디야 엔터테인먼트 시티 건설 등 대규모 건설 프로젝트 추진을 협의한 바 있다. 빈 살만 왕세자는 사우디아라비아 국가개혁 프로젝트인 ‘비전 2030’을 진행하고 있다.
이 부회장은 또 지난달 추석 연휴 기간 삼성물산이 건설 중인 사우디아라비아 리야드 도심 지하철 공사 현장을 방문하고, 며칠 뒤 빈 살만 왕세자를 만나 논의를 진전시켰다. 이 부회장이 삼성의 해외 건설현장을 방문한 건 처음이다.

삼성물산 건설부문 관계자는 “아직 구체적으로 밝힐 수 있는 내용은 없다”고 말했다.
업계에서는 삼성이 사우디아라비아에서 키디야 엔터테인먼트 시티를 시작으로 스마트시티 등 다양한 건설 사업을 연이어 수주할 것으로 기대한다.
