A London-based design firm has developed a partially edible in-flight dinner tray that they hope will help airlines cut down on their plastic waste.
It is estimated that an average of around 18 ounces (500 grams) of single-use plastic per person is used up in the meal deliveries on long-haul flights.

The main body of the tray design is manufactured from recycled coffee grounds, with side-dishes made from wheat bran, algae and banana leaves.
Meanwhile, milk and sauce capsules are made of a soluble seaweed that can be eaten, while the cup is made from rice husk with an algae liner.
In addition to the in-flight meal trays, the design firm has also developed a reusable water flask — designed to fit into the pocket found on the backs of aeroplane seats — which is composed of cork and a compostable bioplastic
Instead of separate single-use knives, forks and spoons, the travel dining set is completed with a spork made out of coconut wood.
When diners have finished their meals, the bamboo-based main lid of the tray is designed to help them compact the other bits of waste for easier disposal.
