Russian artist Evgeny Lushpin boasts an enchanting body of work. With an emphasis on color and light, each of Lushpin’s cityscapes “catches the most precious moments and shows us more than meets the eye,” whether set in the winding streets of Paris or, in this case, the sparkling “City by the Bay.”

In his trio of San Francisco paintings, Lushpin exhibits the beauty of the city after dark. While the subjects of this series are among its most famous sights—including the city’s iconic cable cars, colorful row of “Painted Ladies,” and luminous Bay Bridge—Lushpin is able to shed new light on the scenery with a strategic artistic approach. “The charming play of light and dark, rich palettes of color, hundreds of subtle details,” he says, “all this create the melodic symphony of power and light.”
Lushpin’s technique, however, is not entirely technical. In addition to this treatment of tone, the artist harnesses another tool: his own imagination. “It’s a different state of mind with each painting,” he explains, “but I always completely immerse myself into the time, place and subject of my art.” Together, these methods culminate in the striking aesthetic that has come to characterize his captivating portfolio—and that will make you want to leave your heart in San Francisco.
