The U.S. does not intend to ease its economic sanctions against North Korea until it is confident Pyongyang has "substantially reduced" the threat it poses as a nuclear-armed country, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday.

폼페이오 "목표는 완전한 비핵화"…확신할 때까지 압박 안 풀어 마이크 폼페이오 미국 국무장관이 오는 27~28일 베트남 하노이에서 열리는 2차 미북 정상회담을 앞두고 이번 회담의 목표가 ‘완전한 비핵화’라고 했다. 폼페이오 장관은 21일(현지시각) 미 NBC 방송과의 인터뷰에서 ‘완전한 비핵화가 여전히 목표이자 기대이냐’는 질문에 "그렇다. (완전한 비핵화가) 목표다"라고 말했다. 그는 ‘어떤 타협안이 있는가’라는 질문에 "미국 국민을 안전하게 지키기 위해 우리는 핵 무장된 북한으로부터의 위협을 줄여야 한다"고 했다. 폼페이오 장관은 이어 "우리는 한반도의 평화와 안보, 북한 국민을 위한 보다 밝은 미래를 만들 수 있다"고 덧붙였다.

"The American people should know we have the toughest economic sanctions that have ever been placed on North Korea, and we won't release that pressure until such time as we're confident we've substantially reduced that risk," the top U.S. diplomat told NBC's Today show.
His comments came a week ahead of President Donald Trump's second summit with North Korea leader Kim Jong-un in Hanoi.
Pompeo said he is "very hopeful" Kim "will fulfill the promises that he made in Singapore last year" at the first U.S.-North Korea summit for Pyongyang's "complete denuclearization."
The pact after the Singapore summit, however, did not spell out how and when North Korea would disarm, and U.S. intelligence reports suggest Kim has not moved to destroy his nuclear arsenal.
Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told a congressional panel last month that North Korea "has halted its provocative behavior" by refraining from missile tests and nuclear tests for more than a year. "As well, Kim Jong-un continues to demonstrate openness to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," Coats said.
Despite the end to testing, Coats said, "We currently assess that North Korea will seek to retain its [weapons of mass destruction] capabilities, and is unlikely to completely give up its nuclear weapons and production capabilities."

"Our assessment is bolstered by our observations of some activity that is inconsistent with full denuclearization," he added. Coats said the North Korean leader and the rest of the country's rulers "view nuclear weapons as critical to regime survival."
The recent assessment is at sharp odds with Trump's boast after returning to Washington after the June Singapore summit: "Just landed -- a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office. There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea."
Pompeo said denuclearization is "what we have to get for the American people. We have to reduce the threat of a nuclear-armed North Korea. And then in turn, we can work on peace and security on the peninsula and a brighter future for the North Korean people."
Pompeo said he hopes Trump and Kim will take a "truly historic step forward" at their meeting in the Vietnamese capital.

작년 11월 잠적해 서방국가로의 망명을 타진 중인 것으로 알려진 조성길〈사진〉 전 주(駐)이탈리아 북한 대사대리의 미성년 딸이 북한으로 송환됐다고 이탈리아 정부가 20일(현지 시각) 공식 확인했다. 이탈리아 정·관계 인사들은 "강제 북송(北送)이라면 북한에 책임을 물어야 한다"고 했다.

이탈리아 외교부는 이날 성명을 통해 "북한이 작년 12월 5일 보낸 통지문에서 조성길 부부가 11월 10일 대사관을 떠났고, 그의 딸은 11월 14일 북한으로 되돌아갔다고 했다"고 밝혔다. 그러면서 "조성길의 딸이 북한 대사관의 여직원들과 함께 북한으로 갔다"고 했다. 조성길의 딸은 17세로 고등학교에 재학 중이었던 것으로 알려졌다. 이와 관련, 만리오 디 스테파노 이탈리아 외교부 차관은 페이스북에 글을 올려 "조성길 딸의 북송이 강제로 이뤄진 것이라면 전례 없는 엄중한 일이 될 것이며, 책임 있는 사람들은 대가를 치러야 할 것"이라고 주장했다. 그는 "이탈리아는 조성길의 딸을 보호했어야 했다"며 "그의 딸이 세계 최악의 정권 가운데 하나로부터 고문을 당하고 있을 것"이라고 했다.
조성길 딸 북송과 관련해 우리 정부는 입을 닫고 있다. 정부는 조성길 망명 소식이 언론 보도로 처음 알려진 뒤에도 소극적으로 대응한다는 지적을 받았다. 국정원은 당시 "조성길과 (우리 정부 당국이) 연락한 적이 없다"고 공개적으로 밝혔다. 이 때문에 '조성길에게 한국으로 오지 말라고 우회적 사인을 보낸 것 아니냐'는 지적이 나왔다. 이번 조성길 딸 북송 소식도 태영호 전 북한 공사가 먼저 파악해 공개했다. 정부 소식통은 "사실 관계를 파악 중"이라면서 "앞으로 어떻게 대처할지는 현재로선 말할 수 없다"고 했다.
