Web.com Tour pro makes a 17 (!) on a par 4 at the LECOM Suncoast Classic

he good news for club pro Ben DeArmond, if he's a glass-half-full type guy, is that there is no video footage of his disastrous 17 at the par-4 second at Lakewood National Golf Club. It won't live on the internet for the rest of eternity like Kevin Na's 16 at the 2011 Valero Texas Open. The bad news, of course, is that he still made a 17, spoiling his opening round at the Web.com Tour's LECOM Suncoast Classic.

미국프로골프(PGA) 2부 투어인 웹닷컴 투어에서 한 선수가 한 홀에서만 무려 17타를 쳤다. 그래도 그는 끝까지 경기를 마친 뒤 "포기는 없다"고 했다.
15일(한국시간) 미국 플로리다주 레이크우드 내셔널 골프장(파72)에서 열린 웹닷컴 투어 리컴 선코스트 클래식 1라운드. 스폰서 초청으로 처음 웹닷컴 투어 무대에 선 벤 디아먼드(미국)는 2번 홀(파4)에서 악몽을 겪었다.

페어웨이 오른쪽은 물, 왼쪽은 아웃오브바운즈(OB) 구역인 이 홀에서 디아먼드는 연달아 6번이나 티샷을 OB 구역으로 보냈다. 7번째 시도 후 공을 페어웨이에 올렸을 때는 이미 13타였다. 여기서 3번을 더 친 끝에야 공을 겨우 그린에 올릴 수 있었다. 디아먼드는 그나마 1퍼트를 해 17타로 홀을 마쳤다.
디아몬드는 이날 보기 6개를 더해 19오버파 91타를 쳐 꼴찌인 144위로 첫날을 마쳤다. 디아몬드는 "한 홀에서 17타를 친 건 이번이 처음이다. 심지어 골프를 처음 시작할 때도 그러진 않았다"며 "골프는 가장 어려운 스포츠다. 그러나 오늘 배운 게 있다면 끝까지 포기하지 말고 즐기는 것"이라고 했다. 그러면서 "이건 게임이다. 누구에게나 나쁜 날이 있다. 내일은 어떻게 칠지 보라"고 했다.

미국 골프닷컴에 따르면 디아먼드의 이날 기록은 PGA 투어 역대 최다 타수 기록에는 미치지 못한다. 존 댈리(미국)는 파5 홀에서 18타를 친 적이 있고, 레이 에인슬리는 1938년 US오픈에서 19타(일부에선 23타로 기록)를 쳤다. 토미 아머는 1927년 쇼니 오픈에서 23타를 기록했다. 한국프로골프(KPGA) 투어 한 홀 최다 타수 기록은 신경철(29)이 지난해 A+라이프 효담 제주오픈에서 기록한 18타다.
And, amazingly, DeArmond's debacle pretty much occurred at the same tee box. This was not nearly the journey through the woods that Na went on at TPC San Antonio. DeArmond went full "Tin Cup," the only difference being he did it on the second hole. Not how you want to start your round, some would say:
For those counting, it took DeArmond seven tries to just to put the ball in play, if the PGA Tour app's play-by-play is accurate. It should be noted that sometimes it can be off, and Lakewood National is a course with an ample amount of water hazards, so it's possible DeArmond kept rinsing balls or just had an extremely rough hole. But according to that play-by-play, the South Florida club pro went through every golfer's nightmare, which is struggling just to keep the ball in bounds with the driver.
