Taiwan's 'Bikini Climber' social media star dies after ravine fall

TAIPEI: Taiwanese rescue teams were trying on Tuesday (Jan 22) to retrieve the body of a dead hiker who became famous on social media for taking selfies on top of mountain peaks dressed in a bikini.

대만 출신 ‘비키니 등반가’가 등산 도중 추락 후 사망..."저체온증 추정" 36세 우지원(Gigi Wu·吳季芸) 발 헛디뎌 계곡 아래로 떨어져 당시 해당 지역 큰 비 내려    대만 출신 ‘비키니 등반가’가 등산 도중 사망했다. 사인은 저체온증일 것으로 추정된다. 비키니 등반가 우지윈 씨는 지난 19일 등산을 하던 중 발을 헛디뎌 계곡 아래로 떨어졌다. 이후 움직이기 어려운 상태라는 사실을 지인에게 전달한 뒤 연락이 끊겼다. 소방국은 산악구조대원을 투입해 21일 우 씨를 발견했으나, 이미 사망한 뒤였다. 우 씨가 조난된 당시 해당 지역에 큰 비가 내렸으며, 이로 인해 저체온증에 이르렀을 것이란 게 소방 당국의 설명이다. 겨울철 영상의 기온을 유지하는 대만에서도 저체온증을 대비하지 않은 야외활동은 위험하다는 것. 한국처럼 겨울철 기온이 낮은 곳은 야외활동 시 더 많은 주의가 필요하다. 저체온증은 심부 체온이 35도 이하로 떨어진 상태다. 몸의 열 생산이 줄거나 열 소실이 증가했을 때 저체온증에 이르게 된다. 세 가지 저체온증 : 경증, 중등도, 중증 심부 체온이 33~35도 사이면 ‘경증 저체온증’이다. 닭살이라고 불리는 기모근 수축 현상이 일어나고, 피부가 창백해지며 몸이 떨린다. 자꾸 잠이 오고 몸의 중심을 잡기 어려워진다. 심부 체온이 29~32도 사이면 ‘중등도 저체온증’으로, 심장 박동과 호흡이 느려지고 혼수상태에 빠지게 된다. 근육 떨림은 더 이상 일어나지 않고 오히려 뻣뻣해진다. 심부 체온이 28도 이하가 되면 ‘중증 저체온증’에 이르게 된다. 부정맥이 심해지면서 심정지가 일어나고 혈압이 떨어지며 의식을 잃게 된다. 정상적인 각막 반사와 통증 반사도 일어나지 않는다. 저체온증이 발생했다면? 옷이 젖었을 땐 먼저 마른 옷으로 갈아입고, 몸을 주무르며 혈액순환을 돕도록 한다. 머리, 겨드랑이, 목 등은 열 손실이 큰 부위이니, 보온에 더욱 신경 쓴다. 함께 있는 사람이 있다면 서로 껴안으면서 체온을 높이도록 한다. 옷을 여러 벌 겹쳐 입어 공기층을 만들면 보온 효과가 높아지니, 내복부터 겉옷까지 꼼꼼하게 챙겨 입도록 한다. 마스크, 목도리, 모자, 장갑 등 착용 가능한 것은 모두 입도록 한다. 단 너무 꽉 끼면 혈액순환이 잘 안 돼 오히려 저체온증이 심해질 수 있으니 주의한다. 따뜻한 음료 등을 마시는 것은 좋지만 술은 마시지 않도록 한다. 음주를 하면 뇌 인지 기능이 떨어지고 중추 신경계가 둔화돼 체온 조절 능력이 더욱 떨어지게 된다. 문세영 기자 pomy80@kormedi.com 코메디닷컴

Gigi Wu - dubbed the "Bikini Climber" by fans - used a satellite phone on Saturday to tell friends she had fallen down a ravine in Taiwan's Yushan national park and badly injured herself.

Rescue helicopters struggled to reach her because of bad weather and officials eventually located her lifeless body on Monday.

"The weather conditions in the mountains are not good, we have asked our rescuers to move the body to a more open space and after the weather clears we will make a request for a helicopter to bring the body down," Lin Cheng-yi, from the Nantou County Fire and Rescue Services, told reporters.

Officials said Wu had told friends she was unable to move the lower half of her body after a fall of about 20m to 30m but was able to give her coordinates.

She is the latest in a string of social media adventure seekers who have met an untimely end.

Last October, the bodies of an Indian couple were found at the bottom of a popular overlook in California's Yosemite National Park after hikers alerted officials to their camera equipment at the top of the cliff.

New Taipei City native Wu, 36, built up a sizeable social media following through photos of herself at the top of mountains dressed in bikinis.

She usually wore hiking clothes to scale the mountains, only changing into a bikini once she reached the top.

In an interview with local channel FTV last year, she said she had scaled more than 100 peaks in four years.

"I put on a bikini in each one of the 100 mountains. I only have around 97 bikinis so I accidentally repeated some," she said.

When asked why she did it, she replied: "It just looks so beautiful, what's not to like?"

While Taiwan is a largely tropical country, it boasts a spine of towering peaks down its middle that regularly top 3,000m. In the winter, temperatures routinely drop well below freezing on the mountain slopes.

Lin said their top rescue team hiked for 28 hours to reach the body, only sleeping for three hours because they knew temperatures were rapidly plunging.
