Doosan Signs Contract with Kuwait’s MEW to Extend O&M Service for the SWRO Plant
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has been in charge of the operation and maintenance of Shuwaikh seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant (SWRO), which has been supplying drinking water to Kuwait City for three years, since its completion in 2011.
With Doosan’s proven project execution as the main EPC contractor and O&M capacities, Doosan was rewarded with the $14 million contract from the Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) to continue to deliver O&M services for the plant for another year.
The signing ceremony was held at the project site in Kuwait with Executive Vice President Seok-won Yoon, CEO of Doosan’s Water BG, Assistant Minister Fuad D.A. Al-Aon of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) and other dignitaries in attendance.
First RO seawater desalination plant in Kuwait, supplying water to 450,000 people in Kuwait city
Doosan was selected as the EPC contractor for the SWRO by MEW in 2008, and took charge of the entire construction process ranging from the design, supply and installation of materials and equipment to test operation, successfully completing the project in 2011.
The SWRO, which is located near Shuwaikh Port, is the first seawater desalination plant in Kuwait to use RO technologies for seawater treatment. With an RO capacity of 140,000 tons per day, the plant supplies drinking water to about 450,000 residents in Kuwait City.
Technical Manager Dai Hyoung Cho of the Facility Technology & Operation Team promised to make a manual dedicated to his field by gathering and compiling the achievements and know-how that he has acquired through many trials and errors over the past years. “I hope to give assistance to younger colleagues to help them adapt more quickly to their work by referring to the manual,” he added, referring to his future plans.
Doosan reinforces leadership as the No.1 water solutions provider, occupying 40% of the market share in Kuwait’s seawater desalination market
With more than 40 years of proven experience – not only in constructing large-scale seawater desalination plants with advanced technologies, but also in securing the plants’ operational efficiency – Doosan has been continuously strengthening and extending its leadership in the region’s seawater desalination market
Doosan won a string of water projects in Kuwait, beginning with the project to construct the Sabiya seawater desalination phases 1 and 2 in 2004. This was immediately followed by the project to renovate the Shuaiba plant, and one year later the company was rewarded with the Sabiya seawater desalination plant phase 3 project.
These efforts helped Doosan to evolve into the world’s leading water solutions provider, taking 40 percent of the market share in Kuwait’s seawater desalination market – the largest at present.
Doosan expects the renewed contract will further reinforce its leadership and expand its customer base in the region, having earned recognition for both its leading EPC prowess and its O&M capabilities.
The company plans to expand its markets beyond the Middle East and to serve its customers worldwide including Latin America and Africa.
