   종이를 접는 건 쉽다. 하지만 A4 용지를 7번 접는 건, 사실상 불가능하다. 

거듭제곱으로 두꺼워지는 종이의 두께 때문이다. 

ZDNET KOREA가 지난 2014년 소개한 내용에 따르면, “이론적으로 충분한 크기의 종이와 에너지가 있으면 얼마든지 원하는 만큼 접을 수 있긴 하지만 현실적으로는 불가능한 일”이라고 한다. “1장의 종이를 103번 반으로 접으면 관측 가능한 우주에 도달할 만큼의 두께가 되기 때문”이다. 이 기사는 “0.1mm 두께의 종이를 7번 접으면 128페이지의 노트와 같은 두께가 된다고 설명”했다.

그런데 7번을 접어보면 어떨까?

유튜브의 ‘Hydraulic Press Channel’는 이름 그대로 수압 프레스를 이용해 무엇이든 압축을 해보는 채널이다. A4 용지를 5번까지는 사람의 손으로 반듯하게 접을 수 있지만, 그 이상을 제대로 접는 건 기계의 힘이 필요하다. 그래서 이 채널의 운영자는 수압 프레스를 이용한 것이다. 그렇게 A4 용지는 6번까지 접혔다. 그리고 드디어 7번째 접었을 때.... 어떤 일이 벌어지는지 직접 확인하자. 2분 10초 부분에 결과가 나온다.

Everybody’s heard the story about how you can only fold paper a certain number of times – but is it true or just a myth?

That’s what one YouTube user was on a mission to find out when he decided to try and fold a piece of A4 paper more than seven times using his company’s hydraulic press.

There have been lots of similar experiments in the past, including one involving a 4,000ft roll of toilet paper which was folded 12 times.

However, the hydraulic press guy certainly didn’t get the result he was expecting, as his hilarious reaction (“what the f***!) attests as it explodes under pressure on the seventh fold.

After taking it out he finds that the paper has changed its structure into something “very hard and brittle”. He added: “It’s almost like some kind of soft stone or plastic. It’s harder, and it breaks like some kind of limestone or something like that. So you really cannot fold paper more than seven times.”
