    어도비 플래시 플레이어가 25년 만에 종료된다.

어도비 공식 사이트는 지난 2일 자사 홈페이지를 통해 이달 31일부터 플래시 플레이어의 기술 지원을 종료한다고 밝혔다.

내년부터 취약점 보완 패치(해결책) 업데이트 중지

Some old Flash games, however, are great—and clever workarounds will save them. After all the challenges of 2020, there’s one thing we can all look forward to in the new year: Adobe Flash Player will finally be dead. The once-mighty browser plug-in, which used to be essential for watching web videos, playing casual online games, and visiting bad restaurant websites, received its last update on December 8. Major web browsers such as Google’s Chrome and Apple’s Safari will disable Flash at the end of the year, and Adobe is already encouraging users to uninstall the plug-in from their computers. On January 12, even people who still have Flash installed will be locked out as Adobe blocks Flash content from running within the Flash Player software. Adobe Flash’s death feels more like cause for celebration than mourning. For many years, the plug-in has been notorious for causing crashes, introducing security holes, and making websites feel unnecessarily bloated. It never gained traction on mobile devices—Apple wouldn’t allow Flash on iOS, and Android support was short-lived. Web standards such as HTML5 and JavaScript have made Flash superfluous on desktop browsers. 내년부터는 취약점을 보완하는 패치(해결책) 업데이트가 없다.

보안 전문가들은 플래시 플레이어를 이후에도 사용하면 개별 PC가 보안 위협에 노출될 수 있다고 경고한다.

어도비 측에서는 내년 1월 12일부터 플래시로 된 콘텐츠의 실행을 차단할 것이라고 예고했다.

이어 모든 사용자에게 플래시 플레이어를 즉시 제거할 것을 권고했다.

플래시 플레이어 제거 경고는 2017년 7월부터 나왔다.

플래시 플레이어는 현재의 ‘웹 표준’인 HTML5가 자리잡기 전까지는 동적 웹을 구현하기 위해 필수적인 요소였다.

초보자도 간단한 영상을 표현할 수 있어 과거 졸라맨과 엽기토끼 등 청소년 문화를 이끌며 전성기를 누리기도 했다.

하지만 플러그인 없이 동적 웹을 구현할 수 있게 한 HTML5가 웹 표준이 되면서 활용도가 낮아졌다.

사용이 뜸해지면서 보안 취약점을 노린 악성코드와 바이러스도 늘어났다.

한국인터넷진흥원(KISA)에 따르면 지난해 하반기 기준, 보안 취약점을 악용한 사이버 공격의 31%가 플래시를 통해 발생했다.

플래시 지원이 공식적으로 종료됨에 따라 이런 우려는 더 커질 수 밖에 없는 상황이다.

작년 6월 과학기술정보통신부에 따르면 국내 민간 500대 웹사이트 중 142곳은 여전히 플래시를 사용하는 것으로 나타났다.

일반 사용자가 해야 할 일은 플래시를 시스템에서 제거하는 것이다.

어도비는 “플래시는 사용자가 직접 제거하지 않는 한 시스템에 남아 있을 수 있다”며 “플래시를 제거하면 업데이트와 보안 패치를 실행할 일이 없음으로 시스템 보안에 도움이 된다”고 설명했다.

플래시 플레이어를 삭제하는 방법은 이렇다.

MS윈도우 사용자의 경우, 시작메뉴 검색창에 ‘프로그램 및 기능’을 찾아 ‘프로그램 제거 또는 변경’ 목록에서 ‘Adobe Flash Player’ 프로그램을 삭제 한다. 윈도우 11의 경우 인터넷 화면 우측상단 톱니바퀴 모양의 ‘설정’ 아이콘에서 ‘추가 기능 관리’를 클릭한다. 그런 다음 별도 팝업 창이 나오면 ‘Shockwave Flash Object’ 위치에서 마우스 오른쪽 버튼을 누른 뒤 ‘사용 안 함’을 선택하면 비활성화가 돼 더는 사용할 수 없게 된다. 구글 크롬(Chrome)을 사용하고 있다면 브라우저 주소 줄에 ‘chrome://plugins’를 입력하고 플러그인 대화창 내용 중 Adobe Flash Player 위치에서 ‘사용 중지’를 클릭하면 된다. 이외 어도비 공식 홈페이지에서 제거 프로그램을 사용하거나 업데이트를 이용해 삭제할 수도 있다.
