A theme facility with an 18-meter "life-size" moving statue of Gundam, a giant robot featured in a Japanese science fiction animation series, opened Saturday in Yokohama, near Tokyo.

움직이는 `초대형 건담`에 일본 들썩…높이 18m·무게 25t "우와~ 진짜 움직인다." 애니매이션 `기동전사 건담` 방송 40주년을 기념해 제작된 초대형 건담 로봇이 일본을 뒤흔들고 있다. 애니메이션의 설정과 같은 사이즈의 건담은 수차례 제작된 적이 있으나 다양한 움직임이 가능한 건담이 만들어진 것은 이번이 처음이다 . 21일 일본 현지 언론 등에 따르면 초대형 건담 로봇은 프로젝트 `건담팩토리 요코하마`의 일환으로 `기동전사 건담` 방송 40주년을 기념해 작중 설정과 같은 크기로 재현됐다. 높이 18m, 무게 25t에 이르는 건담 로봇은 요코하마시 야마시타 부두에서 지난달 30일 언론공개 후 이달 19일부터 일반에 공개됐다. 로봇은 당초 지난 10월 공개 예정이었으나 코로나19 사태로 인해 한 차례 미뤄졌다. 코로나 확산 중에도 로봇의 움직이는 모습이 유튜브 등을 중심으로 퍼지면서 야마시타 부두 앞은 한때 사람들로 장사진을 이루기도 했다. 건담 로봇은 다리와 팔, 손가락 등 전신 34곳을 움직일 수 있다. 내부에는 동체 조종실 부분에 설치된 카메라 영상을 보면서 조종체험을 할 수 있는 코너도 마련됐다. 기동전사 건담은 1979년 방송된 일본 TV애니메이션으로 일본을 넘어 전 세계에 매니아 층을 형성하며 수많은 후속작과 아류작을 낳았다. 로봇은 2022년 3월 31일까지 일반에 공개된다. The new statue, which has more than 20 moving parts, was built at the Gundam Factory Yokohama complex after the 40th anniversary of the broadcasting of the "Mobile Suit Gundam" TV series was marked last year.

Visitors can climb to observation decks at 15 meters to 18 meters on the Gundam-Dock Tower to have close-up views of the anime icon, while the statue will take different poses every half an hour and will be lit up in the evening, according to the facility operator, Evolving G Corp.

At the Gundam-Lab exhibition facility on the site, a virtual reality dome has been installed to simulate sitting inside the cockpit of the 25-ton mobile suit.

At an opening ceremony held Friday, animator Yoshiyuki Tomino who created the series thanked people involved in building the statue, saying, "I hadn't expected anyone to make it for real."

The Gundam Factory Yokohama site was previously scheduled to open in October but it was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The site will be open until March 31, 2022.

Admission fees are 1,650 yen ($16) for visitors aged 13 or older, 1,100 yen for those from 7 to 12, and free for 6 or younger if accompanied by a paying adult. To enter the observation decks will cost an additional 3,300 yen per guest.
