Dow Jones breaks 30,000 points for the first time in history

The Dow Jones Industrial Average broke through 30,000 points on Tuesday (US time) as investors were encouraged by the latest progress on developing coronavirus vaccines and news that the transition of power in the US to President-elect Joe Biden will finally begin.

Traders were also encouraged to see that Biden had selected Janet Yellen, a widely respected former Federal Reserve chair, as Treasury Secretary. The Dow rose by 1.5 per cent to close at 30,046. The S&P 500 index rose 1.6 per cent and the Nasdaq added 1.3 per cent. Treasury yields rose as investors became more optimistic about the economy.

The Australian sharemarket is also poised for gains, with futures at at 7.59am AEDT pointing to a jump of 37 points, or 0.6 per cent, at the open.
