한화에너지, 하와이에 태양광·ESS 연계 발전사업 추가 수주

하와이 전력청 주관 ‘쿠페하우 솔라 프로젝트’ 최종 계약자 선정

   한화에너지가 미국 하와이 주에 태양광과 에너지저장장치(Energy Storage System, ESS)를 연계하는 발전사업을 추가 수주했다.

이에 따라 한화에너지는 에너지 신사업 분야 강국인 미국에서 태양광·ESS사업을 연속 수주하는 등 입지를 다지고 있다.

Hawaii reveals full winner list of ‘largest renewable tender’ in state’s history By José Rojo Martín EDF, Hanwha and Innergex lie among the firms contracted at Hawaii’s supposedly largest renewable tender to date, joining already-known winners such as ENGIE. Earlier this week, investor-owned utility Hawaiian Electric released the full list of developers set to deploy 16 solar-plus-storage and standalone projects on the Aloha State, a contracted pipeline of 460MW of solar and nearly 3GWh of storage battery systems. As documented by PV Tech sister title Energy-Storage.News, the identities of some of the high-profile winners had emerged in recent weeks, with ENGIE, Plus Power, Longroad, AES Distributed Energy and Hawaiian Electric all coming forward (see list below) to reveal they had been selected. Hawaii’s major solar and storage push comes as the archipelago works to become fully renewable by 2045, a campaign steered by Hawaiian Electric itself. The shift is driven by, among other factors, the need to replace a coal plant on O’ahu island (180MW) and an oil-powered station on Maui (27.6MW), respectively scheduled to close by 2022 and 2024. Hawaiian Electric – itself contracted for two storage-only projects on Maui and Hawaii Island – believes all 16 renewable ventures could complete construction between 2022 and 2023. 한화에너지는 미국 하와이 전력청(HECO)이 주관하는 태양광·에너지저장장치(ESS) 사업인 ‘쿠페하우 솔라 프로젝트’(Kupehau Solar Project)의 최종 계약자로 선정됐다고 27일 밝혔다.

한화에너지는 이번 프로젝트로 하와이 오아후(Oahu)섬에 60메가와트(MW) 규모의 태양광 발전과 240메가와트시(MWh) 규모의 ESS를 연계한 발전소를 2023년까지 건설하고 향후 20년간 운영한다.

60MW는 약 8만여명이 사용할 수 있는 전력량 규모에 해당한다는 게 한화에너지의 설명이다.

한화에너지는 이번 사업을 자회사인 ‘174 Power Global’을 통해 진행하며, 전체 사업의 개발과 건설, 자금조달, 발전소 운영까지 전 분야를 직접 수행할 계획이다. 

하와이 주정부는 2045년까지 전력 100%를 신재생에너지로 전환하는 목표를 가지고 있으며, 이번 사업들이 큰 역할을 해줄 것으로 기대하고 있다는 게 한화에너지의 설명이다. 

정인섭 한화에너지 대표이사는 “한화에너지가 미국 시장에서 태양광 사업을 통해 청정에너지를 제공하고, ESS사업으로 안정적인 전력을 공급해 지역에 기여한다는 점에서 의미가 크다”며 “미국 내 한국 에너지 기업의 입지를 더욱 확고히 하는 계기로 삼아 지속적인 사업 성과를 이어나갈 계획”이라고 말했다.

한편 한화에너지는 자회사인 174 Power Global을 통해 미국에서 활발한 태양광 및 에너지저장장치 사업개발을 펼치고 있다.
