미얀마 옥 광산 산사태로 "최소 160명 사망" 미얀마 북부 옥 광산에서 발생한 산사태로 인한 사망자가 160명을 넘어섰다고 미얀마 당국이 어제(2일) 밝혔습니다. 미얀마 소방당국은 이날 SNS 계정을 통해 저녁 늦게까지 구조대원들이 162구의 시신을 수습했다고 말했습니다. 미얀마 정부 관계자는 사망자 외에 43명이 입원했다며, 수색 작업이 진행 중이라고 설명했습니다. 희생자들은 대부분 광산 옆 작은 텐트에서 살고 있던 이주자들인 것으로 파악됐습니다. 이번 사고는 북부 카친주의 흐파칸트 옥 광산에 내린 많은 비로 노천광에서 옥을 캐던 광부들이 토사에 휩쓸리면서 발생했습니다. 흐파칸트 지역에서는 지난해에도 산사태로 광부 50여 명이 사망했으며, 2015년에는 붕괴 사고로 100여 명의 광부가 숨졌습니다. 이번 사고는 미얀마에서 발생한 광산 사고 중 5년 만에 최악인 것으로 알려졌습니다. Rescuers in northern Myanmar have pulled several more bodies from the scene of a landslide which killed more than 160 jade miners, many of them migrant workers scouring the land for the precious stone.

The disaster - the worst in memory to strike Myanmar's notoriously dangerous jade mines - occurred on Thursday when a hillside collapsed in heavy monsoon rains in Hpakant, in Kachin state near the border with China.
"The search and rescue missions continued today and we now have 166 bodies," the Myanmar Fire Services Department said in a Facebook post, raising the overnight toll by four.
Dozens more are feared dead.
Hpakant, a remote area 950km (600 miles) north of Myanmar's biggest city, Yangon, is the centre of the world's biggest and most lucrative jade mining industry. Billions of dollars of jade is believed to be scoured each year from bare hillsides by poor migrant workers.
