SCMP에 따르면 중국 우한대 중난병원 의료진과 미국 텍사스주(州) 갤버스턴에 위치한 텍사스대학 연구진들은 중국 후베이성 우한 지역에 있는 병원에 근무하는 2만3387명을 대상으로 항체검사를 실시했다. 검사 대상자들은 모두 코로나19 확진자들이 다수 거쳐 간 병원에서 근무했다.

관련 보고서를 보면, 연구진은 2만3000여 명의 병원 종사자 중 최소 4분의 1이 코로나19에 감염됐을 것이라고 추정했지만 4월 말까지 항체를 보유한 사람은 약 4%에 불과했다.

바이러스 침입으로부터 신체를 보호하는 면역 글로불린(항체)에는 다섯 가지가 있는데, 이중 장기 면역성을 담당하는 항체는 주로 면역 글로불린G(IgG)다. 그런데, IgG 항체검사에서 양성을 받은 병원 종사자 비율은 코로나19 감염자 추정치(25%)보다 크게 낮은 4%에 불과했다는 것.

연구진은 우한지역의 병원에서 코로나19로 입원했던 환자 1470명에 대한 항체검사도 진행했다. 보고서에 따르면 모든 확진자는 증상이 나타나고 19일 이내에 IgG 항체가 생겼다. 하지만 이 중 10% 이상이 추후 IgG 검사에서 음성이 나왔다. 연구진은 "코로나19에서 완치되고 나서 IgG 항체가 사라졌을 확률이 높다"고 판단했다.

현재 코로나19 팬데믹(세계적 대유행)을 해결하려는 전 세계의 노력은 코로나19 바이러스 항체 생성을 중심으로 이뤄지고 있다. 백신 개발 연구에서부터 스웨덴이 시도하는 집단면역까지 많은 대응책이 코로나19 완치자에게는 장기간 몸을보호해주는 항체가 형성된다는 가정에서 비롯됐다. 이번 연구 결과는 자칫 이런 전제가 흔들릴 수도 있다는 것을 의미한다.

연구진들은 이에 대해 "코로나19 감염됐더라도 장기간 항체가 지속될 확률이 낮다"고 결론 내렸다. 이 연구는 논문 사전 공개사이트(medRxiv)에 지난 16일(현지시간) 게재됐다. 아직 동료 과학자들의 검토를 거치진 않은 상태다.
