ITTF considering dropping individual World Championships

The head of the ITTF has said the organisation is considering getting rid of its individual World Championships, as part of its ongoing competition restructure.

In an open letter, alluding to the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic, Steve Dainton said: “these are very hard days, but this also gives us an immense opportunity.” The CEO used a quote attributed to Winston Churchill –  “never let a good crisis go to waste” – to promote his own thoughts on a shake-up of existing formats.

The ITTF has for the past two years been working on World Table Tennis, a restructure of its competitions and commercial business. It recently announced details of some of the coming changes, including the introduction of up to four new annual individual tournaments, the ‘Grand Smashes’. Dainton’s letter signalled there are more changes to come, and that the Grand Smashes may replace the current individual World Championships.

“I believe it may be time to think if, for the future, it would be better to have a World Team Championships only,” he said. The Grand Smashes would, he said, “be equal to or larger than a World Individual Championships. With three to four ‘Grand Smashes’ per year, we would be overstretching and confusing the calendar and market if we also have a World Individual Championships. The three to four major events held on the international stage throughout each year will reach a larger audience and will perform much better than once every two years. From these events, we would also be able to define an individual world champion.”

Describing in broader terms the change that World Table Tennis would bring, Dainton said: “We will benefit from a business-minded and managed international events platform that has hired industry experts to ensure it, has investment needed to transform the product, focusing purely on the value of the sport and the company – all of which will enable table tennis to become one of the leading global sporting properties. ‘Freshness’ will be what the market is seeking. This will also allow us to ensure that the lines between the ITTF as a Federation serving its members and a company, whose goal is to commercialise the sport, are more correctly drawn.”

Dainton said he hoped the ideas he put forward  would help rejuvenate the sport when the Covid-19 crisis has passed.

For now, he said, the ITTF’s top priority is the health and welfare of its members. The federation is to set up fundraising initiatives to support table tennis stakeholders affected by the pandemic.
