     미국무역대표부(USTR)는 2일(현지시간) 프랑스가 미 기술(IT)기업에 부과하는 디지털세에 대해 관세로 맞대응하겠다고 밝혔다.

USTR은 이날 홈페이지를 통해 디지털세를 두고 5개월 동안 조사한 결과를 공개하면서 “프랑스의 디지털세가 미 기업을 차별하고 국제 세금 정책의 일관된 원칙에 부합하지 않으며, 영향을 받는 미 기업에 이례적인 부담을 주고 있다고 결정했다”고 밝혔다.

USTR은 특히 미 디지털 기업인 구글, 애플, 페이스북, 아마존이 차별을 받게 된다고 명시했다.

로버트 라이트하이저 USTR 대표는 “USTR의 오늘 결정은 미 기업에 지나친 부담을 주거나 미 기업을 차별하는 디지털세에 대해 미국이 조치를 취하리라는 분명한 신호를 보내고 있다”고 말했다.

또 “오스트리아, 이탈리아, 터키의 디지털세에 대해서도 무역법 301조 적용 여부를 조사하고 있다”고 경고했다.

USTR은 디지털세에 대응해 24억달러 규모 프랑스산에 관세를 부과해야 한다는 입장이다. 이에 따라 프랑스산 요구르트, 스파클링 와인, 화장품 제품 등 특정 품목에 대해 최대 100% 관세가 적용 가능하다.

USTR은 2020년 1월6일까지 공개 논평을 받을 예정이다.

앞서 프랑스에선 매출 7억5000만유로, 프랑스 내 매출 2500만유로 이상 IT기업을 상대로 영업매출의 3%를 세금으로 부과하는 디지털세법안이 의회를 통과했다.
