Enec confirms progress on Unit 3's energisation, marking milestone in Barakah NEP's testing and commissioning

Overall construction is 93% complete on Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant (Barakah NEP) in Abu Dhabi, which Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) is developing alongside prime contractor and joint venture partner, Korea Electric Power Corporation, as well as Nawah Energy Company and Abu Dhabi Transmission & Despatch Company (Transco).

UAE 바라카 원전 전 공정 93% 도달    아랍 에미레이트 원자력공사(ENEC)가 주계약자 겸 합작회사인 한국전력, 나와 에너지 회사(NAWA), 아부다비 송전 & 디스패치 회사(트랜스코) 등과 함께 건설 중인 아부다비의 바라카 원자력발전소(바라카 NEP)는 전체 건설 공정이 93%에 다달았다. 바라카 원전 2호기는 2019년 8월 현재 95%, 3호기와 4호기는 각각 91%와 82%의 공정율을 기록하고 있다. 자세한 내용은 ENEC이 바라카 원전 3호기에 대한 최근 공정을 통해 밝혀졌다. 바라카 3호기의 주출력 변압기, 가스 절연 버스, 보조 동력 변압기 및 배기 변압기가 통전되어 발전소 시험 및 시운전에서 중요한 이정표를 기록했다. 트랜스코(Transco)는 2호기에서 유사 작업을 완료한 지 약 1년 후와 바라카 원전 1호기에 대해 동일한 작업이 완료된 후 2년 후에 3호기 작업들을 수행했다. 시험 및 커미셔닝 팀은 이제1호기와 2호기를 시험하는 동안 얻은 경험등을 구현하여 3호기 고온 기능 시험(HFT)을 시작할 준비를 시작할 것이다. ENEC은 HFT가 수 주에 걸쳐 실시되며 "주요 계통에 대해 거의 200개의 개별 및 통합 시험을 실시하여 원자로 용기에 핵연료 어셈블리가 없는 정상 작동 조건에서 성능을 점검한다"고 설명했다. 바라카 원전 1호기는 현재 커미셔닝 및 테스트 단계에 있으며, 이후 규제 검토를 거쳐 연방정부로부터 원자력규제 운영면허를 받게 된다. Unit 2 of Barakah NEP is 95% complete as of August 2019, while construction on Units 3 and 4 is respectively 91% and 82% complete.

The details were revealed by Enec as it revealed recent progress on Unit 3 of Barakah NEP.

The main power transformer, gas insulated bus, auxiliary power transformers, and excitation transformer of Barakah NEP’s Unit 3 have been energised, marking a key milestone in the plant’s testing and commissioning.

Transco carried out the work which comes approximately a year after the completion of similar work on Unit 2, and two years after the same work was completed for Unit 1 of Barakah NEP.

Testing and commissioning teams will now begin preparing for the commencement of hot functional testing (HFT) at Unit 3, implementing the lessons learned during their testing of Units 1 and 2.

In a statement, Enec explained that HFT takes place over a number of weeks and consists of “almost 200 individual and integrated tests performed on major systems to check their performance under normal operational conditions, without the presence of nuclear fuel assemblies in the reactor vessel”.

Unit 1 of Barakah NEP is currently in the commissioning and testing stage, after which it will go through regulatory review and receive its operating licence from Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation.

Commenting on Unit 3’s progress, Enec’s chief executive officer, HE Eng Mohamed Al Hammadi, said: “I am proud of the continued progress being made at Unit 3 of the Barakah NEP.

“We have maintained our track record of safety and efficiency with the successful energisation of the unit’s transformers, and we continue to establish Barakah NEP as the benchmark for new nuclear construction projects worldwide.”
