Residents and visitors to London will soon be able to enjoy panoramic views from one of Europe’s largest roof terraces, part of the transformation of Grade II* London industrial icon, Battersea Power Station.

The generous terrace, delivered by LDA Design and designed in conjunction with James Corner Field Operations, tops Foster + Partners’ undulating new building. The gardens have lent their name to the entire phase of this development to be called Battersea Roof Gardens.

The terrace features picnic spots, sun decks and fitness areas. Just published images show that from this spectacular vantage point, residents will be able to grow herbs, gather to watch a movie, barbeque or exercise whilst enjoying views of the capital.

As development intensifies in our towns and cities, rooftop gardens provide vital access to much needed green space. In London, they now cover an area larger than Hyde Park, outpacing other global cities. They provide much-needed habitat for our insect and bird populations.

The terrace is part of ‘Electric Boulevard’, the third phase of Europe’s largest regeneration project. It includes the creation of approximately 1,300 homes to the south of the Power Station together with a new high street also being designed by LDA Design. This phase of the development is expected to complete in 2021.

LDA Design Director and Battersea project lead, Benjamin Walker, commented:

“The public and private spaces of this incredible site are designed to cater for the communities of the future.

“We are tackling modern problems such as loneliness, and mental and physical health through a variety of spaces that bring people together physically, emotionally and culturally.

“We want people to be surprised by their new home; we want them to be proud and to expect the unexpected, keeping the magic of living in London at the very forefront of their minds.”

The Electric Boulevard designs are the result of a unique partnership comprising LDA Design, James Corner Field Operations, Foster + Partners and Gehry Partners. Prospect Place is Frank Gehry’s first and only residential project in the UK. It is designed in partnership with LDA Design to deliver private and public gardens, terraces and a large children’s play area.

The scale of Battersea Power Station is monumental, and includes 19 acres of public space with a new six-acre riverfront park, a town square and a new Zone 1 London Underground Tube station (Northern Line extension). It opens up a stretch of the Thames that has been sealed off to the public for over a century. Along with more than 4,000 new homes, half the development will be given over to commercial space, including restaurants, shops and offices.

When the transformation of Battersea Power Station completes, 25,000 people will be living and working there. Circus West Village, the first finished phase, is now home to more than 1,000 people. WilkinsonEyre’s restoration of the Power Station itself is set to open to the public in 2021.

Simon Murphy, Chief Executive, Battersea Power Station, said:

“We are making real progress now with the transformation of the Power Station, which will soon become one of London’s most exciting new destinations, home to Apple’s UK campus as well as several hundred shops, restaurants, event spaces and, of course, some of the finest residences in the world. Momentum is also building on our third phase, which brings together the very best architects in the world to create something truly unique for London.”
