美라스베이거스 초고속터널 사업 승인…2021년 CES때 개통 목표
'컨벤션 도시' 미국 네바다주 라스베이거스의 컨벤션·관광국(LVCVA)이 22일(현지시간) 테슬라 최고경영자(CEO) 일론 머스크의 터널 굴착 벤처기업 보어링컴퍼니를 4천860만 달러(579억 원) 규모의 초고속 터널 프로젝트 사업자로 선정했다고 미 IT매체 더 버지가 전했다.
보어링컴퍼니는 '피플 무버' 또는 'LVCC(라스베이거스 컨벤션센터) 루프'로 명명될 초고속 지하터널 프로젝트를 진행하게 됐다.
LVCVA는 2021년 1월에 열릴 세계 최대 전자쇼인 CES에 맞춰 터널을 개통한다는 목표다.

LVCVA CEO Steve Hill says the future tunnel could one day expand to the airport and downtown. "Because innovation leads to a low-cost system, it can help solve congestion problems not only in the resort corridor," Hill said. He also said tourism is crucial to the city as in 2018, 42 million people visited Las Vegas with almost 2 million attending conventions. "Today is a day to celebrate, but it's also a day to get to work. We have 16-18 months worth of work," Hill said.

이를 위해 내년 11월 시험 운행에 들어갈 계획이라고 보어링컴퍼니는 밝혔다.
LVCVA는 초고속 터널 자체가 관광객을 유인하는 요인이 될 것으로 기대했다. 지하터널은 CES가 열리는 주 전시장인 라스베이거스 컨벤션센터와 호텔 밀집지역을 연결할 것으로 알려졌다.
보어링컴퍼니는 앞서 지난해 12월 미 로스앤젤레스(LA) 남부 호손에서 LA국제공항(LAX)까지 1.14마일(1.83㎞)에 걸쳐 시공한 초고속 지하터널 '루프'에서 운행 시연행사를 열었다.

머스크는 애초 시속 240㎞의 초고속 운행을 호언했지만 실제 루프에서는 테슬라 모델X가 시속 60㎞의 저속으로 달려 다소 실망감을 안겼다.
라스베이거스 터널 프로젝트는 보어링컴퍼니가 먼저 굴착하고 시 당국에 활용을 요청하는 방식이 아니라 시 당국이 적극적으로 굴착을 제안했다는 점에서 다른 대도시 터널과는 사업 추진 양상이 다른 것으로 평가된다.
일론 머스크의 LA 초고속 터널 '루프'
머스크는 시카고 도심과 오헤어 국제공항 사이 구간, 워싱턴DC와 볼티모어 구간, LA 도심과 다저스타디움 구간 등에서도 초고속 터널 사업을 추진 중이다.
시카고 터널은 새로 시정을 맡게 된 로리 라이트풋 시장이 미온적인 반응을 보이면서 제동이 걸렸다. LA 서부에서는 주민들이 환경 소송을 제기해 영향평가가 진행 중이다.
