현대건설, 24억5000만달러 규모 이라크 바스라 해수플랜트 건설공사 단독 수주
올해 해외 마수걸이 수주…중동 지역 확대
하루 500만 배럴 용량의 물 생산 가능한 플랜트
현대건설은 22일 이라크에서 24억5000만달러(약 2조9249억원) 규모의 해수공급시설(Common Seawater Supply Project) 공사 낙찰의향서(LOI)를 접수했다고 밝혔다.
이 공사는 이라크 석유부 산하 바스라석유회사(Basrah Oil Company)가 발주한 바스라 남부 유전의 원유 증산을 위해 유정에 주입할 하루 500만 배럴 용량의 물 생산이 가능한 해수처리 플랜트 프로젝트다.

(Hyundai E&C) landed a 2.9 trillion won ($2.4 billion) order to build a large-scale seawater supply facility in Iraq, hitting big in its first overseas order for the year. Hyundai E&C said on Wednesday that it won the preliminary award from Iraq’s state-run Basrah Oil Company for the $2.45 billion Common Seawater Supply Project that involves building a seawater disposal plant that allows up to 5 million barrels of water production per day to be injected to the oil well to increase crude supply from an oil field in southern Basra in Iraq. Hyundai E&C will exclusively build the facility for completion in 49 months after breaking ground. The builder said that it was able to secure the large-scale order based on trust from the Iraqi government and the oil company as it has been highly evaluated of its outstanding technical skills from previous projects in Iraq including the $6 billion order to build an oil refining facility in Karbala. Hyundai E&C shares closed Wednesday 2 percent up at 50,200 won. The Korean government did its part by cementing friendly relations with Iraq through the momentum of celebrating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations earlier this year. It sent a group of special delegation to Iraq to build practical cooperative relationship. Chung Jin-haeng, vice chairman of Hyundai E&C, who formerly worked at Hyundai Motor until last year, also visited Iraq twice as part of efforts to win the latest order. He has also been focusing on expanding overseas order network by reviewing sites in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Hyundai E&C said that construction and operations of the seawater supply facility will not only help increase crude production in Iraq but also contribute to boosting regional economic growth.

공사는 현대건설이 단독으로 수주했으며 공사기간은 착공후 49개월이다. 현대건설은 프로젝트가 완공되면 이라크 내 원유 생산량 증산과 재정확충에 기여하며 경제 성장 기반마련에 공헌할 것으로 내다봤다.
현대건설은 이번 프로젝트에 대해 지난 2014년 수주해 공사가 진행되고 있는 카르발라 정유공장 공사에 이은 대형 공사 수주라고 평가하고 있다.
현대건설 관계자는 "지난 두 차례 이라크 전쟁 중 현지에 끝까지 남아 현장을 지키고 이라크에서 오랜 기간 주요한 국책 공사를 성공적으로 수행해 경제성장에 많은 기여를 한 현대건설에 대한 굳건한 신뢰감이 주요 요인으로 작용했다"고 말했다.
그러면서 "향후에도 이라크 재건을 위한 개발 장기 계획으로 지속 발주될 것으로 전망되는 정유공장, 전력시설, 주택 등 다양한 분야의 수주경쟁에서 유리한 고지를 선점할 것"이라고 강조했다.
한편 현대건설은 1977년 바스라 하수도 1단계 공사를 시작으로 이라크에 진출해 알무사임 화력발전소 공사, 북부철도, 바그다드 메디컬시티, 카르발라 정유공장 공사 등 39건, 약 70억달러(약 7조 8000억원)의 공사를 수주했다.
현대건설은 이번에 달성한 올해 첫 해외 수주를 시작으로 전통적 수주 우위지역인 중동·아시아 지역을 중심으로 해외 수주를 확대할 계획이다. 또 가스·복합화력·매립, 항만과 송·변전 등에 집중할 방침이다.
