MANILA -- A Singapore-based network infrastructure firm will be investing around USD 2 billion to roll out fiber optic cables over the next ten years to further improve Internet services in the Philippines.

대우조선해양건설, 필리핀 광케이블 매설공사 수주 3,700만불 규모 최근 싱가포르 필리핀에 20억불 투자 대우조선해양건설이 최근 건설업계의 해외수주 부진이 지속되는 가운데 필리핀 광케이블 매설공사를 수주했다. 국내 건설업계의 불황이 지속되는 가운데 대우조선해양건설이 지난해부터 해외사업 진출을 적극적으로 노력한 결과물이다. 이번에 수주한 공사는 필리핀 루손(Luzon)섬 일대에 1570㎞에 이르는 광케이블을 매설하는 공사로 총 공사비는 약 3,700만불(한화 약 438억원) 규모다. 공사기간은 22개월을 예상하고 있다. 이번 광케이블 공사는 필리핀 현지의 인터넷 사업자인 CONVERGE가 발주하는 사업으로 대우조선해양건설(DSC)의 현지 법인인 DSCP와 KT의 현지 법인인 KTP가 컨소시엄으로 사업에 참여한다. 본 공사를 발주한 CONVERGE는 1996년 설립된 회사로, 필리핀 16개 지역, 82개 도시에 1만2000km의 서비스 망을 제공하고 있다. 이번에 공사하는 루손섬은 필리핀 북부에 위치한 제 1의 섬으로 행정상 마닐라 수도를 포함하고 있는 필리핀의 가장 중요한 행정구역이다. 면적은 필리핀 전체의 3분의 1, 인구는 22%를 차지하고 있다. 대우조선해양건설 관계자는 "이번 공사수주로 필리핀 내 건설사업 진출을 위한 교두보를 마련하게 되었다"며 "또한 이번 공사가 완료되면 추가로 1,500km에 이르는 광케이블 2차 공사도 수주할 것으로 기대되며, 여타 필리핀 공사에도 적극 참여할 예정이다"라고 말했다. In a statement on Monday, the Department of Information and Communications and Technology (DICT) said Hyalroute Group will deploy fiber cables through the Fiber Optic Cable (FOC) Network initiative of its subsidiary Philippine Fiber Optic Cable Network Ltd., Inc. (PFOCN) in various phases between 2019 to 2028.
The DICT will provide assistance to PFOCN in procuring the needed permits and licenses for the successful implementation of their initiative.
“There is a need for more fiber optic cables in this country, thus this partnership will greatly improve our telecommunication services. We can now have cable networks that anybody can use and this jives with our National Broadband Plan,” Acting Secretary Eliseo M. Rio Jr. said.

The partnership was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement with PFOCN last Thursday.
The rollout of the fiber optic cables will also form part of the DICT’s Free Public Wi-Fi network to reach the unserved and underserved areas in the country.
The DICT is pushing for the establishment of a National Broadband Network to improve Internet connectivity especially in the rural areas of the country through utilizing a 6,154-kilometer dark fiber network spanning from Luzon to Mindanao. (PR)
