Saudi Arabia will begin construction work on a 2.6-gigawatt Makkah solar power project in 2019, it was announced on the side-lines of the Makkah Economic Forum, where the kingdom's Ministry of Energy signed a memorandum of understanding with Makkah Region Development Authority to develop the Al Faisaliah Solar Project.

The announcement comes in line with the country’s under-construction megaproject, the $10bn (SAR37.5tn) Al-Faisaliah City, which will be an expansion of the Holy City of Makkah.

According to state news agency, SPA, Saudi Arabia's Renewable Energy Projects Development Office (Repdo) will issue a tender for a 600 MW solar plant in 2019.

The remaining 2GW of power will be developed by the kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund Public Investment Fund (PIF) and selected partners.

The latest solar project is aimed at targeting the rising electricity and energy needs of the people of the Al Faisaliah City.

In November 2018, construction work began for the photovoltaic 300MW Saakaka PV IPP, the first renewable energy project being developed under the King Salman Renewable Energy Initiative.

Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power is leading the project that will supply the electricity network in the kingdom's western region; increase the security and flexibility of electric power; and provide Al Faisaliah city with clean energy.
