Just before his passing on January 10, 2014, Sam Berns was a Junior at Foxboro High School in Foxboro, Massachusetts, where he achieved highest honors and was a percussion section leader in the high school marching band. He also achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Sam was diagnosed with Progeria, a rare, rapid aging disease, at the age of 2. He is featured in the Emmy award-winning documentary Life According to Sam, which premiered on HBO on October 21, 2013, 2 days before his 17th birthday. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.   1996년에 태어나  2014년 1월 10일 세상을 떠나기 직전 샘 번스는 매사추세츠 주 폭스보로 폭스보로 고등학교 2학년으로 이곳에서 최고의 영예를 안았고 고교 행진 밴드에서 타악부 단장을 맡았다. 그는 또한 미국의 보이 스카우트에서 이글 스카우트의 순위를 획득했다. 샘은 2살 때 희귀하고 빠른 노화증인 프로게리아라는 진단을 받았다. 그는 17세 생일을 이틀 앞둔 2013년 10월 21일 HBO에서 초연된 에미상 수상 다큐멘터리 라이프에 출연했다.
