Turkish Parliament Speaker Binali Yildirim lauds the project saying it will be completed earlier than planned

Turkey's parliament speaker said Friday a landmark bridge project on Canakkale Strait will be completed a year earlier than planned.

"세계 최장 경간 터키 차나칼레 현수교 공기 1년 단축" '이스탄불 시장 출마' 터키 의회 의장, 축사서 밝혀 4조2천억원 투입 2023년에서 2022년 준공 의지 보여     한국 건설업계가 터키에서 수주, 건설 중인 '세계 최장' 현수교 공사 기간이 1년 단축된다. 비날리 이을드름 터키 의회 의장은 18일(현지시간) 서부 차나칼레에서 열린 '1915 차나칼레 대교' 케이슨기초(교각 기초구조) 공사 기념식에서 "완공 시기는 터키공화국 100주년을 기념하는 2023년으로 예정됐지만, 열심히 노력해 2022년 3월 18일까지 완성할 수 있다"고 말했다고 관영 아나돌루통신이 보도했다. 이을드름 의장은 "이 교량 건설에는 200억 리라(약 4조2천억원)가 들어간다"면서, "이는 일부 국가의 연간 세입보다 큰 규모"라고 설명했다.   터키 주요 언론은 이을드름 의장의 축사를 주요 뉴스로 일제히 보도했다. 이을드름 의장은 오는 3월 말 치르는 터키 지방선거에서 최대 관심지이자 격전지로 꼽히는 이스탄불에서 여당 '정의개발당'(AKP) 후보로 출마했다. 이을드름 의장은 "트라키아 지역은 우리나라 서비스, 산업, 관광 분야에서, 또 서(西)아나톨리아 지역의 경제·사회 생활에서 가장 중요한 중심지"라면서 "1915 차나칼레 대교가 완성되면 이 지역의 매력이 더욱 커질 것"이라고 기대했다. 트라키아는 발칸산맥, 에게해, 흑해로 둘러싸인 지역을 가리키며 터키에서는 유럽 부분이 이 지역에 속한다. 1915 차나칼레 대교는 터키 서부 차나칼레주(州)의 랍세키와 겔리볼루(갈리폴리) 사이 다르다넬스해협을 가로지르는 3.7㎞ 길이 현수교와 연결도로를 건설하는 사업이다. 한국 건설사 SK건설과 대립산업, 터키 업체 리마크와 야프메르케지로 구성된 컨소시엄은 2016년 1월 입찰에서 일본의 이도추(伊藤忠) 컨소시엄을 꺾고 사업을 따냈다. "The completion of the project was first slated for 2023, which marks the centenary of the Turkish Republic, but with hard work it is ready to be completed on March 18, 2022," Binali Yildirim said at a ceremony on floating caisson foundations of the Canakkale 1915 Bridge.

“One of them weighs 54 tons and the other 50 tons. Their height is 20 meters (over 65 feet) and they are the size of a football ground,” Yildirim added.

He also said once the bridge is completed weather conditions would not affect the travel.

"When the bridge is completed, Thrace, the most important center of service, industry and tourism of our country, and the economic and social life in the West Anatolian Region will become much more attractive," he said.

“The bridge costs around 20 billion [Turkish] lira [approx. $4 billion],” he said, noting that it was more than many countries’ annual revenue.

He added the length of the bridge was going to be 5 kilometers (over 3 miles) and the bridge has the longest distance between two columns.

“This is a first, and firsts suit us, suit Turkey,” Yildirim said.

He said the bridge would reduce the time to pass the Canakkale Strait from one hour to four minutes.

“This is not a just bridge, it is a huge, technological masterpiece,” he said.

The Canakkale 1915 Bridge -- named in memory of the country’s historic victory in the region during WWI -- will span over 2,000 meters between Lapseki and Gelibolu (Gallipoli) in northwestern Turkey.

It will be 32 meters longer than the world’s longest bridge -- the Akashi-Kaikyo bridge between Kobe and Awaji Island in Japan.
