    이라크의 신항만 프로젝트에 참여 중인 한국 대기업의 고위 간부가 갑자기 숨진 채 발견돼 이라크 당국이 수사에 나섰다고 AP통신이 10일(현지시간) 보도했다.

AP에 따르면 대우건설의 이라크 남부 바스라주(州) 알포(Al Faw) 신항만 사업 건설을 담당하는 한국인 고위 간부 A씨가 바스라 지역의 기업단지 내에서 지난 9일 아침 한 직원에 의해 숨진 채 발견됐다.

Mahdi Al-Tamimi, director of the Office of the High Commission for Human Rights, said in a statement that Park Chul-ho, head of the Daewoo E&C office, which is implementing the Al-Faw port project, committed suicide in the Basra Governorate, southern Iraq. "The Korean official hanged himself with a wire, and the incident was discovered by a service worker in the company," Al-Tamimi said. Basra Police First Lt. Nafi Al-Jabri told Anadolu Agency that "the police forces found Park on Friday hanging inside his residence." Al-Jabri said that the police in Basra Governorate are conducting an extensive investigation into the incident to determine its circumstances. It was not clear whether the incident had criminal aspect or not, but it came three days after the Iraqi authorities signed a contract with the Korean side to start implementing Al-Faw port project. The previous Iraqi government estimated the total cost to complete the construction project for the Al-Faw port at about €4.4 billion ($5.2 billion). 이라크 당국은 수사기관의 초동수사 결과 A씨가 극단적 선택을 한 것으로 추정했지만, 의원들과 여러 관리가 이런 결론에 반대의견을 표명했고 이후 내무부가 A씨의 사인을 조사하기 위한 위원회를 꾸려 활동을 개시했다고 AP통신이 전했다.

내무부 소속 조사위원회는 정확한 사인 규명을 위해 A씨가 있었던 기업단지 내에 설치된 감시 카메라 등을 조사하기로 했다.

앞서 A씨가 숨진 채 발견된 뒤 이라크 교통부는 성명을 내고 A씨는 스스로 목숨을 끊은 것이라며 그의 죽음이 신항만 프로젝트를 좌초시키지 않을 것이라는 입장을 밝혔다.

하지만 이라크 국회의 카림 알-카비 부의장은 정부에 A씨의 죽음과 관련한 본격적인 진상 조사를 요구했다고 AP통신은 전했다.

AP에 따르면 알-카비 부의장은 A씨가 숨진 시점과 관련해 이라크 국영언론과 인터뷰에서 의문을 제기했다. 그는 이라크 교통부가 알포 신항만 프로젝트의 다음 단계의 계약 체결이 임박했다고 발표한 뒤 A씨가 숨졌다고 지적했다.

이라크 국회의 다수당 대표인 하킴 알-자밀리 의원도 이 같은 의혹 제기에 동조하고 정부에 진상조사를 요구했다고 AP는 전했다.

주이라크 한국대사관은 사건 현장에 사건담당 영사를 급파하고 이라크 수사 당국에도 협조를 요청했다.

대우건설도 진상 파악에 나섰다. 대우건설 관계자는 "현지 수사기관의 수사를 지켜보고 있고 내부적으로도 사태를 파악 중"이라면서 "외교부 등 관계기관과도 협력하고 있다"고 말했다.
