국제유가 급락시킨 사우디, 원전으로 간다?

월스트릿저널 "중국 협력으로 원자로 개발 성과 얻었다"

   국제유가가 이달 들어 급락한 것은 사우디아라비아의 아시아 수출가격 인하가 결정적이다. 국제유가의 기준인 브렌트유 또한 9일 오후(한국시간) 현재 40달러 아래로 내려갔다.

이처럼 국제유가를 떨어뜨린 사우디아라비아가 원자력에너지 개발에 나선 것으로 알려졌다.

Saudi Arabia has been actively seeking help with expertise in nuclear energy to develop its own generation capacity. The U.S. has been an obvious first choice among potential partners, but Washington has taken a cautious approach, making it clear it would only help Riyadh develop nuclear generation capabilities if it agrees to U.S. oversight to prevent the weaponization of nuclear power. Israel has been concerned as well and has made this concern known to the United States. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia reached out to China for help with nuclear reactor construction. According to a Wall Street Journal report citing unnamed sources in the know, Saudi Arabia had used Chinese help to build a facility for the extraction of uranium yellowcake from the radioactive ore—an early step in making fuel for a nuclear reactor. 로이터와 오일프라이스 등 외신들은 8일(현지시간) 사우디아라비아가 국제원자력기구(IAEA)로부터 원전개발에 필요한 지원을 약속받았다고 전했다.

이들 매체가 현지보도를 인용해 전한 내용에 따르면 라파엘 그로시 IAEA 사무총장은 "사우디아라비아가 원자력 에너지에 관심이 있으며 우리는 필요한 협력을 제공하고 있다"고 말했다.

오일프라이스는 사우디아라비아가 협력을 구한 첫 번째 상대는 미국이지만, 미국은 핵무기 개발 가능성을 우려해 조심스러운 입장이라고 전했다. 이 매체에 따르면 이스라엘은 이와 관련한 우려를 미국에 전달했다. 월스트릿저널은 사우디아라비아가 원자로 건설에서 중국의 협력을 받았다고 보도했다.

석유가 풍부한 중동국가들은 원전개발에 소극적이었지만 국제유가 하락이 이어지면서 이 지역에서도 관심이 높아지고 있다. 중동에서 가장 먼저 원전 개발에 나선 것은 아랍에미리트(UAE)라고 오일프라이스는 전했다.
