사코스 로보틱스, 전신형 외골격 로봇 '가디언 XO' 판매
내년 1월 미군에 납품 예정
미국 솔트레이크 시티에 위치한 산업용 웨어러블 로봇 전문업체인 '사코스 로보틱스(Sarcos Robotics)'가 산업용 외골격 로봇인 ‘가디언 XO’의 개발을 완료하고 본격 시판에 들어간다.
‘IEEE 스펙트럼’ 등 매체에 따르면 사코스 로보틱스는 산업용 외골격 로봇 ‘가디언 XO’의 알파 버전을 개발하고 내년 1월부터 고객들에게 제품을 공급한다. 내년 1월 미군과 외골격 로봇 자문 그룹을 대상으로 제품을 공급하며 일반 상용 고객에게는 사전 주문을 받아 내년말 제품을 인도한다는 계획이다. 구입 비용을 감안해 렌털 방식으로 제품을 공급한다. 렌털 비용은 연 10만 달러 수준이다.

SALT LAKE CITY — Sarcos Robotics, which develops industrial exoskeletons and other robotics aimed to enhance productivity and safety, today unveiled the Alpha version of its Guardian XO industrial exoskeleton. The company said the first shipments of the Alpha units would be delivered to members of its exoskeleton advisory group and the U.S. military in January 2020. The Guardian XO is a full-body, powered industrial exoskeleton, a battery-powered wearable robot system that can safely lift up to 200 pounds for extended work sessions, Sarcos said. Designed to augment rather than replace humans, the system combines human intelligence, instinct and judgment with the strength, endurance, and precision of machines to address skilled labor shortages and occupational safety issues across several industries. 사코스 로보틱스는 지난 2000년 이후 미 국방성 산하 DARPA(고등방위계획국)의 지원을 받아 웨어러블 로봇 개발을 추진해왔으며, 마이크로소프트, GE 등의 투자를 받아 ‘가디언 XO’의 개발에 필요한 자금을 충당해왔다. 무려 20년동안 웨어러블 로봇 개발에 투자해 나온 최초의 결실이 바로 ‘가디언 XO’인 셈이다.
가디언 XO 알파 버전은 몸 전체에 걸쳐 착용하는 전신형 로봇으로 24 자유도를 지원한다. 최대 200파운드(90kg)의 짐을 큰 힘들이지 않고 들어올릴 수 있다. 배터리를 장착한 후 최대 8시간 동안 작업할 수 있으며 배터리 교환 방식을 채택해 작업중에 배터리를 교체해 작업을 이어갈 수 있다.
사코스 로보틱스측은 가디언 XO 로봇이 기존의 인력을 대체하기 보다는 인간의 지능과 본능, 반사 신경, 판단력을 활용한다는 게 중요한 특징이라고 설명했다. 기존 외골격 로봇의 경우 탈착에 적지 않은 시간이 들어가는데 반해 가디언 XO는 몇분이면 착탈법을 배워 활용할 수 있다고 회사측은 설명했다. 로봇 착용시에도 비교적 자연스런 보행이 가능한 게 특징이다.
이번 알파 버전 발표 이전에 사코스 로보틱스는 올해초 미 공군이 주최한 ‘모빌리티 가디언 2019’에서 가디언 XO의 시제품을 시연했다. 지난 3월에는 미 특수작전사령부와 가디언 XO의 양산 전단계 모델에 대한 공급 계약을 체결한 바 있다. 사코스는 지난 2016년 창설된 ‘외골격 기술자문그룹(X-TAG)’에 참여한 기업을 대상으로 가디언 XO로봇의 공급을 추진한다는 계획이다.
